FRENCH LANE PASSES AWAYI Chicago Tribune Turf Writer Dies in inEvanston Evanston Hospital 111 for forMore More Than a Year French L Lane turf editor and special sports writer for the Chicago Tribune since 1921 and a former president of the Illinois Turf Writers Association died Friday night in the Evanston Hospital at the age of 48 He had not been in the best of health for almost a year and succumbed to a complica ¬ tion of ailments ailmentsLane Lane had not covered the races here since early in the Hawthorne meeting although he attended the sport as a spectator on the final day of the season there thereLane Lane whose friends among turf folks are legion joined the staff of the Tribune after having served as sports and later news editor of the Peoria JournalTranscript and was widely known as one of the most able writers in his field He is survived by his diwod daughterFuneral and a 12yearold daughter Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed completedAs As a tribute to his memory Edward OHare president and John Patton secre ¬ tary and treasurer of the National Jockey Club had the flag at half mast at Sports ¬ mans Park
