CLODION BY A NECK NECKi i t Earns Close Decision in Scarsdale Handicap at Empire City Autumn Day Stakes to Ciencia Smart Crack and Liberty Flight FlightDisappointing Disappointing Favorites NEW YORK N Y Oct 29 Walter Car ¬ ters Clodion and R J Kleebergs Ciencia were winners of the two final features of the long New York racing season at the Hill ¬ top course of the Empire City Association this afternoon afternoonClodion Clodion earned a close decision in the mile and seventy yards of the Scarsdale Handi ¬ cap adding 5050 to his earnings while Ciencia took down the Autumn Days Stakes i for juvenile fillies that netted her 2375 and in both features the favorites were beaten beatenFor For the final day of the season the weath ¬ er conditions were Ideal but the track was muddy from the recent rains The crowd was one of the largest of the meeting and when the first three favorites were home winners the patrons began the day in a good humor even though Smart Crack failed in the Autumn Days and Liberty Flight disap ¬ pointed in the Scarsdale Incidentally both of these favorites bore the silks of T F Morgan MorganTHREATENS THREATENS RUNAWAY RUNAWAYIn In the Scarsdale Woolf attempted to make a runaway of the mile and seventy yards Evidently of the opinion the son of Liberty Limited could steal away far enough to stick it out he sprinted him along until he was half a dozen lengths clear He was go ¬ ing so strongly when in the lead that it seemed well nigh certain he would be win ¬ ner Then after rounding from the back stretch he began to weaken weakenClodion Clodion had been racing along under a slight restraint in second place and he was first to close up on the Morgan gelding Then Hebert roused the lightly weighted Essjaytee and he shot up on the inside to be close in the contention In the meantime Liberty Flight was tiring so badly that it was apparent he was soundly beaten For a few strides Essjaytee showed in front by reason of cutting the corner into the stretch but he had accepted the worst going to save long out outIn In that furlong Clodion hung on to be over the line winner by a neck Essjaytee was a length before Mythical King one that had closed some ground and then followed the soundlybeaten Liberty Flight with Rogu ish Girl the only other starter never hav ing been in the hunt huntClodion Clodion was well played though Liberty Flight was always the choice and after be ¬ ing as good as six to one he went to the post with 9 to 2 the quotation while Ess ¬ jaytee was the outsider at 15 to 1 1OUTGAMES OUTGAMES SMART CRACK CRACKWhen When Ciencia outgamed T P Morgans Smart Crack to win the Autumn Days Stakes she whipped a filly that had been unbeaten all the season But it will be remembered that in her last previous race the daughter of Kiev was closer to defeat than on any other occasion It was a close fit and the Kleeberg miss only won by a head while eight lengths back of the bat ¬ tling pair Blue Fairy beat Carence the only other starter by ten lengths This was tfie fourth victory in twelve starts for the daugh ter of Cohort and it added 2375 to her earn ¬ ings bringing her total to 7780 7780With With little delay at the start the four fillies left on the same stride and as was to be expected Smart Crack at once dashed into a command of four lengths Carence was second with Blue Fairy third and Cien ¬ cia brought up the rear some half dozen lengths back of the Morgan miss before the first post of the five and threequarters furlongs dash had been reached reachedYarberry Yarberry was sitting still on the daughter of Cohort and racing her along inside where she was saving some ground Before the turn from the back stretch had bsen com ¬ pleted she had improved her pace and was making up ground gradually but there seemed little chance for her to run down the flying leader leaderIt It was three furlongs from the finish she had put Carence away by that time She was in second place and rapidly clos ¬ ing on Smart Crack when the turn for home was reached Woolf sensed the danger and he went to work on the Morgan filly She responded gamely but Ciencia continued to race straight and true inside of her until it was her head that was over the line first Smart Crack was always the choice of the small field and she was quoted at 9 to 20 at post time
