With Favorite Difficult to Select Ligaroti Pompoon Challedon Honey Cloud Thanks ¬ giving and Fighting Fox All Admired by Public Brann Entry May Wind Up Choice BOSTON Mass July 11 Seventeen of the best stake horses in the county have been entered for the 50000 added one mile and an eighth Massachusetts Handicap Suffolk Downs big feature which will be de ¬ cided over the brown racing strip of the Eastern Racing Association to ¬ morrow afternoon before a crowd that should be one of the largest in the history of New England racing It will be the fifth running of the race which is rapidly taking its place as one of the standouts on the turf calen ¬ dar and the third running in which the event has carried its present value If all those entered start tomorrow afternoon the event will gross the tremendous sum of 74100 the winner will earn 52450 The winners net portion will be 1000 less in case Ligaroti or Pagliacci flash past the judges first for each of these horses were supplementary entries at that thatfee fee There are five prizes in the rich event The second horse will earn the handsome sum of 10000 the third horse 5000 the fourth 2500 and the fifth 1250 1250WIDE WIDE OPEN EVENT EVENTNever Never has there been a more wide open stake event in this racing center Ex ¬ perienced price makers and handicappera differ sharply as to the choice this morning when entries were released It is generally believed that the shortestpriced horse in the race will be Z1 to 1 The honor of favoritism may go to W L Branns entry of Challedon and Aetholwold Challedon generally rated the second best threeyear old in the country showed his worth to New Englanders when he carried 124 pounds and won the Yankee Handicap here in time that was not far off the track record recordChalledon Challedon will carry 113 pounds tomor ¬ row He will oppose many of the speediest and toughest older horses in the country He will probably have to come outside a great number of horses when he makes his run It is probable that he will have to come from behind a fast pace If he accom ¬ plishes this feat successfully many horse ¬ men will be rating him the superior of his Continued on thirteenth page SEVENTEEN IN 50000 MASSACHUSETTS HANDICAP Continued from first page arch rival Johnstown a horse he defeated in the Preakness Challcdon will break from No 12 post position Although he will be inside of five horses he should be able to gain the outside running position that he appears to want wantRICHARDS RICHARDS ON CHALLEDON He will be ridden by Harry Richards a veteran who ranks as one of the countrys leading riders a strong boy an excelled judge of pace and a lad who has won some of the countrys most famous stakes His staolemate Aethelwold will be piloted by curleyhaired Charley Stevenson and will have the feather of 105 up Aethelwold hard ¬ ly appears to belong in such a contest contestNo No horse has worked faster for the race than Ligaroti an importation from the Ar ¬ gentine which carries the silks of Bing Crosbys and Lin Howards Binglin Stable The South American broke the track record for five furlongs as he went that distance in 5S3 the other day He has been one of the outstanding performers of the California turf where his most widelyheralded feat came at Del Mar There he ran Seabiscuit to a nose in a thrilling match race and many observers disagreed violently with the deci ¬ sion of the camera believing that Ligaroti had won wonBoth Both Crosby and Howard are here to see Ligaroti perform tomorrow and both are very confident young men I dont believe the horse was ever better than he is right now Howard remarked today If we dont get back on top ve should have no excuses excusesIll Ill be crooning hard for him said Bing and I think Ill be taking a lot of eastern money back West with me We are going to be tough to beat tomorrow Crosby was at the track this morning during workout hours and never was he in a more jovial mood moodLIGAROTI LIGAROTI IX FAVOR FAVORLigaroti Ligaroti will be pressing closely for the post favoritism and may wind up the choice He shares top weight of 120 pounds with Pompoon arid will be ridden by Ken Mc Combs CombsPompoon Pompoon which carries the colors of the Philadelphian Jerry Louchheim has been working exceptionally well himself for the race He has started only once here and was beaten half a dozen lengths by Pag liacci That race should not weigh too heav ¬ ily against his chances for it was run over a tricky heavy track going that causes this longstriding son of Pompey to lose all co ¬ ordination of action actionThe The important thing In considering Fom poons chances is that the horse is sound again as sound as he has been since the days when he was the nations leading two yearold Work watchers and experienced horsemen concur with trainer Johnny Lof tus in this opinion Pompoon is an extremely fast horse from the gate and the number one post should not be against him He is a rough and ready horse when right and should be able to take care of himself in the big field fieldHONEY HONEY CLOUD DANGEROUS DANGEROUSMrs Mrs A J Abels Honey Cloud coming off a race in which he equalled the track record at Delaware will be heavily supported in the open netting race His final for the race was a mile in 137 a trial that convinced dock ¬ ers he was a deadfit and extremelyfast fellow Trainer Whitey Abel says that he fears nothing in the race is extremely confi ¬ dent of scoring a convincing victory Hi has even said that the horse may better Sea biscuits track mark of 149 for the mile and a furlong furlongAbel Abel claimed Honey Cloud for 2250 not so 16ng ago and since then has developed him into one of the leading handicap per ¬ formers of the land Honey Cloud carries 114 pounds will be ridden by Lee Hardy He breaks from number 14 post postSeveral Several of Americas most famous silks will be on parade when the Massachusetts field answers the bugle call late tomorrow afternoon The red dotted jacket of Belair made famous by the triumphs of Gallant Fox arid many other sterling thoroughbreds will be borne by Fighting Fox Fighting Fox goes into the race fresh from a triumph at Em ¬ pire City in which he lowered the five and threequarters fourlong track record Many rate him strictly a sprinter but this is not the opinion of the veteran Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons The son of Gallant Fox has speed in abundance The big question mark with him is whether he can carry it for a mile and an eighth in such a field He breaks from stall No 5 has 113 pounds in the saddle and will be piloted by Jimmy Stout StoutTHANKSGIVING THANKSGIVING ON 3EDGE Mrs Parker Comings Thanksgiving sec ¬ ond in the Suburban and winner of the Excelsior in New York ran a disappointing race in his one start at this point an effort that may make him an outsider in the wagering However there is no doubting the class of the onetime Travers winner and he has worked well enough He will be coupled with Ciencia which carries the silks of the King Ranch Thanksgivings weight is 118 which makes him second to the dual high weights in the race Raymond Workman does the riding ridingCiencia Ciencia is the only threeyearold in the race besides Challedon and the only filly to accept Her principal claim to fame is her score in the 50000 Santa Anita Derby this spring Since then she has proved a fair sort of horse but if she should win against such a field as that which goes in the race tomorrow it would be a major upset She is a light weight under 106 She will have the services of Americas greatest light weight rider Nick Wall WallCLODION CLODION CONSISTENT CONSISTENTTrainer Trainer Lester Smith does not believe that Clodion which he trains for R A Moore is out of the race Clodion has shown con ¬ sistently good form in New England stakes having won several 5000 added events He seems to have none the best of the weights at 114 Joe Rosen one of the leading older jockeys riding in this section rides him Clodion is a bad post actor but his manners have improved this season seasonMrs Mrs Emil Denemark will send out War Minstrel under 111 and Blind Eagle under 108 Eddie Robart rides the former and Johnny Adams the latter latterShandon Shandon Farms surprise entry Burning Star and Brandywine Stables Masked Gen ¬ eral will be grouped in the mutuel field Burning Star has 110 pounds and Warren Yarberry up Masked General has 108 and Maurice Peters PetersThe The Suffolk Downs track was never faster than it is at present The heat wave in New England has broken but there has been no rain and the weather bureau says to ¬ morrow will be fair although light showers I may fall late in the day dayPost Post time for the race is 530
