BASIL JAMES IN THE LIMELIGHT Steals the Spotlight From Bogert Winner of Pelham Handicap Mill River Racer Big Surprise in Empire Citys Principal Contest Pays Twelve to One YONKERS N Y July 11 Catching the chalk players unaware the Mill River Stables Bogert threeyearold dark chestnut son of Gino and Sun Pantica by Sun Briar eked out a hard earned triumph in the Pel ham Handicap a class D offering for threeyearolds and upward that topped to 1 days program at Empire City The handful j of spectators who backed this colt were rewarded at the rate of 12 to 1 1Nearest Nearest to the Mill River representative at the end of the five and threequarter fur ¬ longs sprint was Dewey Benthams Bill D which was beaten a half length for first money Third honors fell to Mrs Charles W Williams Zostera and fourth to Mrs S C Registers Marriage the choice at 11 to 5 5Up Up to and through the feature attraction Basil James who suffered a nasty fall at Empire City last Wednesday when Scotch Flower ran away was very much in the spotlight This clever and doughty little knight of the saddle won the opener with the Howe Stables Westing the choice and the second with Joseph Dushocks Cantwell another favorite In the headline event James piloted Bold Turk from the Paragon Stables and for a half mile was out in front His mount tired badly however and wound up in last place placeDROP DROP IN TEMPERATURE TEMPERATUREA A marked drop overnight in the tempera ¬ ture helped to attract an unusually good j week day crowd to the Yonkers course At j tendance was estimated at above 8000 j while weather was ideal and the track at its best the program itself was of a rather ordinary type However it provided highly satisfactory entertainment and in a number of contests finishes were of the most ex ¬ citing variety varietyWithdrawal Withdrawal from the Pelham of Mrs Val Cranes Black Look and Paragon Stables1 Deep End narrowed the number of starters down to eight Bold Turk under 118 pounds was top weight of the band with Bill D second on the weight list under 116 pounds Marriage the choice and Bogert threeyear olds each packed 107 pounds At the break Bill D appeared to get a slight edge while Zostera in No 1 position was away sluggishly James shot Bold Turk to the front immediately and Maurice Peters went right after him with Bill D At the end of the first eighth the Paragon racer was in front by a head A few strides farther on Bill D forged to the top and then in the next furlong drew into a length and a half lead leadBOGERT BOGERT GAMELY GAMELYBogeit Bogeit in third place for the first three sixteenths moved smartly to the leaders on the turn and as he hit the head of the stretch unleashed a burst of speed that in a few strides carried him to the front by a length and a half Near the end he tired perceptibly but F A Smith by dint of hard riding kept him going long enough to click in 23 46 109 109Bill Bill D hard ridden kept trying gamely but he had all he could do to take second honors by a half length from Zostera The latter which lacked early speed finished with a tremendous rush and in the final sixteenth appeared to be going fastest of all Mar ¬ riage fourth by a head ran in spots and seemed to be handled a bit poorly by Donald Meade
