DISCLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY WASHINGTON D C July 12 The Amer ¬ ican Federation of Labor through President William Green today disclaimed responsi ¬ bility for the wave of WPA strikes which have swept the country With more than 77000 WPA workers striking in protest against the new 193940 Relief Act which decreed that skilled workers must labor longer hours Green opened a protest meet ¬ ing of Federation officials in Washington with the statement The strikes have been spontaneous in character They have never been ordered by the A F of L because we fully recognize the fact that the remedy lies with Congress rather than through strikes on WPA projects
