produced what may be a fair kind of a two yearold in Alsab a bay son of Good Goods Winds Chant who races for Mrs Al Sabath wife of the Hawthorne race track official Overcoming several obstacles which might have prevented a lesser colt from entering the winners circle Alsab raced to an im ¬ pressive and easy victory here today in the good time of 101 over a racing strip which had been dulled by the recent rains and rewarded those who made him second choice to Royal Martha with the good return of 980 A crowd of close to 20000 witnessed the popular triumph of the Chicagoowned colt and applauded Alsab when the veteran Earl Pool cantered him back to the winners ring ringWhile While there was no question about Alsabs victory the battle for the place award was a fierce one as W D Butch Covingtons Kirwin drove to the wire a head in advance t of Valdina Farms Valdina Orphan Far ¬ ther back Mrs A B Karles K Dorko fin ¬ ished fourth During the early running Pool took his mount back as Sergeant Bill was out front setting a stiff early pace and Kirwin was being rated along in second place Rounding the final bend Sergeant Bill began to short ¬ en his stride and Kirwin went into the lead as Alsab was called upon for his best bestOPENING OPENING AIDS WINNER WINNERStraightening Straightening into the front lane the Sab ¬ ath colt got a break when Valdina Orphan went wide Pool shot him through the open ¬ ing and the Good Goods colt quickly dis ¬ posed of Kirwin in spite of the impressive manner in which that gelding had assumed command Once he overhauled the Coving ton representative there was no doubt about the decision and he finished out like a good colt with his ears forward and his stride eating up the ground in an easy wideopen gallop gallopRoyal Royal Martha up fourth fourthDRIVING DRIVING FINISH FINISHMrs Mrs Jake Lowensteins Hermina B took the lead soon after the start and hung on stubbornly to win the opener of the day a sixfurlong claiming race for older horses of the 16001800 bracket Through the stretch King Cotton who went to the post the fa ¬ vorite was tucked in on the rail and lacked racing room as Valdina Joe was moving up on the outside
