FAIRMOUNTS LARGEST CROWD CROWDCOLLINSVILLE COLLINSVILLE 111 May 31 According to general manager D C Burnet there was in excess of 27000 racing fans at Fairmount Park yesterday for the opening of the local season It was the largest crowd in the history of the track which began its first meeting in the fall of 1925 Keeping in step with other tracks which announced large handles the Fairmount Park Jockey Club management announced this morning the total handle for the eight races yester ¬ day was 203416 topping all mutuel wager ¬ ing here since the track was purchased from Col Matt J Winn more than ten years ago Incidentally the handle for the correspond ¬ ing day a year ago was 178000 178000Because Because of the large crowd mutuel win ¬ dow clerks were unable to handle all the wagering and many hundreds were shut out each race
