PAUL L KELLEY Who yesterday saddled T B McGraths Irish Day for the latters third straight triumph at Lincoln Fields as well as Float Away for his own account Carlade Closes in Whirlwind Style to Annex Purse at Detroit Course Finishes Two and Half Lengths Before Peggy Byrd and Pays 2380 2380DETROIT DETROIT Mich June 9 F Thompsons colors were carried to victory in the first race at the Detroit Fair Grounds today by Carlade fiveyearold daughter of Carlaris and Roulade Well handled by Bobby Mor ¬ ris Carlade came to the close of the six furlongs two and onehalf lengths before Mrs E Clouds Peggy Byrd The latter was a length on Mrs D Hicks favored Come Home third thirdTwelve Twelve went to the post for the initial offering and starter Bryan Steele sent the field off to a good start after a minute delay at the post Peggy Byrd had the best speed in the run down the back stretch and was closely attended by Lucky Pompi The ultimate winner was away slowly and had only two horses beaten when she reached the upper turn Peggy Byrd shook off Lucky Pompi when straightened for the final drive and Come Home moved up to offer a good challenge when King sent the favorite through on the rail to save much ground Carlade was sixth at this stage and Morris then took the Thompson mare to the extreme outside outsideRUNNING RUNNING TEME 114 114Peggy Peggy Byrd hung on in determined fash ion but could not withstand Carlades fine closing bid but easily held Come Home safe for second honors Running time over the slightly dull track was 114 and Carlade overlooked in the wagering returned her supporters a 2380 straight mutuel mutuelCloudy Cloudy and threatening weather again prevailed for the eightrace program pre ¬ sented at the local oval today A good sized crowd however turned out to witness the sport and was treated to several closely contested events This added much to the enthusiastic atmosphere predominating and betting was brisk throughout the evening Despite the fact that heavy rains fell late Saturday and again yesterday the racing strip was rated fast for the initial offering The fifth race which engaged six of the better platers here served as the feature attraction River Divide Farm stables Rock Maker and E K Thomas Fairly Fly were well supported for the sixfurlong sprint R A Forshas Siganar E R Plunketts Fetchet Kilpatrick Hunleys Jim Pat and J F Ladleys High Plaid completed the field for the headliner C W Damons Sun Risk favored in the betting graduated in impressive style when she came to the end of the four and onehalf furlongs of the second race three lengths in advance of Sallymar The latter held a two and a half length advantage over Bettie Wynn which earned third from the nine other maiden twoyearolds which met Sun Risk outrun the first threeeighths while Honey Rock and Good Lady battled for the early lead was taken to the outside for the stretch run When put to good urging on the part of Jack Flinchum she closed stoutly to earn the top award Sallymar also came from behind to take second honors Sun Risk paid 7 to 5 in the straight wager ¬ ing and completed the Daily Double which was worth 6840
