LEADING TRAINERS TO RACE HORSES AT ARLINGTON BEN JONES HEADS LIST OF THOSE COMING HERE HEREJacobs Jacobs Jolley Womeldorff Higdon and Wilson All High in Standings Also Expected ExpectedThose Those race patrons who recognize the im ¬ portance of trainers in the success of the thoroughbred horses will discover something of special interest to them when they glance over the names of the conditioners who will be sending their charges postward when Arlington Park opens its thirtyfourday meeting a week from next Monday The big North Side tracks increased stakes schedule and purse distribution has already drawn the best racing stables in the coun ¬ try This naturally means that the best trainers will be on hand handIn In checking over the list of incoming trainers racing secretary Bob Shelley has discovered that the battle for the national honors is likely to be decided at the North Side track The six conditioners currently leading the country in the matter f saddling winners all will be on hand during the Ar ¬ lington meeting They are Ben Jones Hirsch Jacobs Moody Jolley Dave Womel ¬ dorff Ross Higdon and Leonard Wilson To add to the publics interest and to pro ¬ vide something more than the mere winning of races for the trainers there is the train ¬ ers portion of the special awards for condi ¬ tioners and jockeys The trainers share amounts to 3500 This will be divided into two periods with first second and third prizes All of this should provide an added incentive to the present half dozen leaders leadersWhen When the latest standings were compiled following Saturdays racing there was a range of seventeen points between Ben Jones the Calumet Farm trainer who was on top with fortyfive winners and Leonard Wilson the Lexbrook Stable conditioner who had twentyeight In between the pair were Jacobs with forty Jolley with thirty two and Womeldorff and Higdon each with twentynine WOMELDORFF 1940 WINNER WINNERWomeldorff Womeldorff who trains for Mrs Emil Denemark was the leading trainer of 1940 saddling 108 winners for the Chicagoowned stable Prior to 1940 for seven consecutive years Jacobs headed the list establishing a record unequaled in the history of the Amer ¬ ican turf Since 1928 the Brooklynite who was second ten winners behind Womeldorff last year had saddled more than 1000 win ¬ ners whose earnings amounted to 1000000 1000000Higdon Higdon was the leading trainer at Arling ¬ ton Park in 1940 finishing fourth in the na ¬ tional standing Jolley trains for the suc ¬ cessful Tower Stable StableCompeting Competing at Arlington Park against the present leaders are expected to be such noted trainers as Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons Max Hirsch Cecil Wilhelm Eual Wyatt Roy Waldron Burley Parke Jimmy Smith J J Flanigan Steve Judge Paul Kelley and many others most of whose horses will be here for the entire meeting The others will come to fill stake engagements engagementsThe The six men vieing for national honors under present plans will campaign at Arling ¬ ton for the entire thirtyfour days The exact date for the arrival of Ben Jones with War ¬ ren Wrights forty horses including the great Whirlaway is not known but it is believed that he will be on hand within a day or so of the June 23 opening Ross Higdon and his Woolford Farm horses Leonard Wilson with the Lexbrook string and Dave Womel ¬ dorff in charge of the Denemark horses will van over from Lincoln Fields late next week Hirsch Jacobs and Moody Jolley are now in the East and have sent word they will be on hand early
