MACIAS VINA COMBINATION POPULAR AT SUFFOLK DOWNS Former Native of Cuba Has Five Horses Who Are Ridden by Latter LatterBOSTON BOSTON Mass June 9 Suffolk Downs is joining the rest of the country in cement ¬ ing our LatinAmerican friendships friendshipsRacing Racing in New England for the first time this season is Sergio Macias a graduate of the University of Havana and an architect by profession who has a string of five head in training at the East Boston course With him is apprentice Joe Vina a youngster rid ¬ ing his first year on the big time and win ¬ ner of sixty races since January 19 the date he rode his first winner on NineoTwo at Oriental Park ParkSergio Sergio Macias attended prep school at the Winona Military Academy at Winona N J in his precollege days and was an athlete of no mean ability later becoming a three letter man at the University of Havana where he excelled in baseball and in track He was captain of the varsity baseball team and rated the best second baseman ever pro ¬ duced by Havana Incidentally he learned his baseball under Jim Kendrigan an old Boston University athlete and for the past score years head Havana athletic coach coachFIVE FIVE HEAD IN STABLE STABLEIt It was shortly afler graduation that Ma ¬ cias entered racing as a diversion paying 25 for his first thoroughbred a mare named Melya Rose His string has since swelled to five including Molinara a winner in the early days of the Suffolk Downs meeting Totin Home winner of six races in his silks and Merry Morn a 700 claim which only Monday whipped a good field of platers at the Boston course coursePerhaps Perhaps the best horse in his barn is young Joe Vina a boy he picked up in Cuba and hired to do his riding after the young ¬ ster had graduated from the Cuban govern ¬ mental jockey academy It is at this school Cuban boys learn the art of horsebacking and the study of equine anatomy spending two hours each afternoon under the tutelage of experienced horsemen and riders Races are also staged at Oriental Park during tri summer months restricted to jockey acad ¬ emy riders It is one reason for the many capable Cuban riders who have invaded this country in recent seasons seasonsThe The combination of Sergio Macias and Joe Vina is becoming extremely popular around Suffolk IDowns and in lurn this pair is doing much to advance LatinAmerican re ¬ lationship at least as far as New England is concerned
