FOUR STAKES AT ARLINGTON PARK CLOSE MONDAY EXPECT OUTSTANDING HORSES TO BE NAMED NAMEDQuartet Quartet of Thirteen Important Fixtures Are Stars and Stripes Matron Myrtlewood and Primer VVith the opening of the thirtyfourday meeting not quite two weeks away nom ¬ inations for four of Arlington Parks added money events will close on Monday June 16 Nominations for three other events the Arlington Lassie the Arlington Futurity and the Arlington Classic have already closed and if the response to those events is any indication there will also be a full complement of outstanding horses nominated to the races closing Monday Included on the list closing Monday are the 10000 added Stars and Stripes Handi ¬ cap the 7500 added Arlington Matron Handicap the 2500 Myrtlewood Handicap and the 2500 added Primer Stakes StakesNaturally Naturally the Stars and Stripes Handicap is one of the banner events of the Arlington meeting and the Chicago season It was in ¬ augurated back in 1929 when it was won by Dowagiac Sun Beau ran third that year and again in 1930 which indicates what kind of horses were running in this race even that early in its development developmentThe The Stars and Stripes Handicap is a mile and oneeighth event for threeyearolds and upward and among the past winners are in ¬ cluded Blue Larkspur in 1930 Plucky Play in 1931 Equipoise in 1932 Indian Runner in 1933 and 1934 Discovery in 1935 Stand Pat in 1936 Corinto in 1937 War Minstrel in 1938 Count dOr in 1939 and Advocator in 1940 1940NOT NOT FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO WIN WINOther Other than those who won the race such suchv v good horses as Mike Hall Tred Avon and andSeabiscuit Seabiscuit also ran in the Stars and Stripes Stripesbut but were not fortunate enough to bow to the judges judgesLikewise Likewise the Matron Handicap is one of the outstanding races for fillies and mares in the country It was inaugurated in 1930 when it was won by Valenciennes but it was not on the program1 in 1933 and 1934 after having been won by Risque in 1931 and Tred Avon in 1932 The race was revived again in 1937 when it was won by the fast mare Marica Idle Miss accounted for the 1938 running Flying Lill won in 1939 and Shine ONight won the race last year The roster of this event also is studded with the names of outstanding fillies and mares who were in the field but who were not powerful enough to win fillies and mares like Alcibiades Jewell Dorsett Dolly Val Unerring and Manic OHara OHaraThe The Myrtlewood Handicap will feature the opening of the Arlington Park program on Monday June 23 and takes the place of the Inaugural Handicap It is an event for three yearolds and upward over six furlongs for 2500 in added money moneyThe The Primer will be run on Wednesday June 25 Fashioned for twoyearolds it will be contested at five and onehalf furlongs furlongsNORTHWESTERN NORTHWESTERN HANDICAP JULY Z ZIn In addition Arlington Park also has scheduled the Northwestern Handicap the Grassland the Cinderella the Arlington Handicap the Equipoise Mile and the Hyde Park Stakes The Northwestern Handicap is a sevenfurlong event for threeyearolds and upward with 2500 in added money offered and it will be run on Wednesday July 2 Nominations for this stake close June 23 23Nominations Nominations for the Grassland which is at a mile and onesixteenth with 2500 in added money close June 30 The race is designed for threeyearolds and upward and will be run over the turf course The Arlington Handicap is of course the pre ¬ mier feature over the grass This is a test of a mile and threesixteenths for threeyear olds and upward and 7500 in added money is offered Nominations close July 10 10Both Both the Cinderella and the Equipoise Mile are for 2500 added each The former is fashioned for fillies and mares and will be decided over seven furlongs It will be run on Wednesday July 16 but nominations close July 7 Nominations for the Equipoise Mile which is for threeyearolds and up ¬ ward and down for decision on July 23 close July 14 14The The last stake on the Arlington Park pro ¬ gram to close for nominations is the Hyde Park Stakes All nominations for this 5000 added event for twoyearolds which will feature the program on July 31 must be in by July 21
