FAY MATE FINDS SOFT STRIP AT FAIRMOUNT TO HER LIKING LIKINGMate Mate Filly Turns Back Polly Pauline for Initial Victory VictoryCOLLINSVILLE COLLINSVILLE 111 June 10 A heavy rain last night and early this morning left the Fairmount Park track in a heavy con ¬ dition for todays program and horses par ¬ tial to soft footing had their first chance of the current meeting to race over a track other than fast The first seven days of the season saw horses participating over a fast racing strip which was badly in need of a drenching drenchingFay Fay Mate a daughter of Mate Rare Bud showed a liking for the heavy going and won the first race of her career when she downed Polly Pauline Royal Put and nine other twoyearolds in the fourth race at four and a half furlongs In hand while Two Grand Fittstown Polly Pauline and Royal Put were making the early pace Alex Schlenker when ready was forced to go to the extreme outside of the field in the stretch and coming with good speed wore down the leaders in the last sixteenth to win going away by more than a length Polly Pauline who met with some interfer ¬ ence in the drive came again and outfin ished Royal Put by a half length lengthThe The change in track conditions failed to cut down the fields as seven of the events had capacity fields while the seventh race saw but two declarations declarationsSECOND SECOND LADIES DAY DAYIt It was Ladies Day the second Tuesday in which the fair sex were guests of the management with many accepting the in ¬ vitation of general manager D C Burnett Because of the change in the track condi ¬ tions as well as threatening weather the crowd was not up to proportions of the first full week of the local session sessionShortly Shortly before the horses reached the post for the first race i light shower foil result ¬ ing in spectators scampering for shelter un ¬ der the grandstand However it cleared thereafter with still a threat of rain in the air for the first part of the program programA A sixfurlong race for horses of the older division opened the program and the winner was furnished by J F Beck whose Inductor a member of the mutuel field got up in the last stride to garner a nose verdict over Miss Nadi Dusky Maid was third The winner handled by Andy Clutter was away slowly and lost much ground while picking up his field and took to the middle of the track for the drive driveBorders Borders Boy racing for F J Demary Orange Texas breeder joined the double winners at the meeting when he scored his second straight victory in the second race at five and a half furlongs Ret Tet was second and third went to Thistle Nancy NancyPlowing Plowing her way through the deep going Pompe Grande racing for the partnership of J Garvie and G W Dunn left the non winner ranks when she downed Mary Van Buren Tomye and nine others in the third race which was at six furlongs
