ARLINGTONS ANNUAL MEETING BEGINS MONDAY WHIRLAWAY ADDS DWYER TO LIST OF TRIUMPHS MARKET WISE SECOND IN AQUEDUCT FIXTURE FIXTURECalumet Calumet Star Scores by Length and Quarter Claim of Foul Not Allowed Tremont to Requested RequestedNEW NEW YORK N Y June 21 Twenty thousand Metropolitan racegoers who sent the champion Whirlaway to the post a 1 to 5 shot sweltered through some anxious mo ¬ ments at Aqueduct this afternoon before the stewards flashed the official sign on his wellearned victory in the historic Dwyer Stakes mile and a quarter headliner on a double stake bill The triple crown winner did not capture the Dwyer in quite the run ¬ away fashion of his earlier triumphs but was only hand ridden by Eddie Arcaro as he flashed by the winning pole with a length and a quarter to spare over Louis Tufanos Market Wise who had been third to him in the Derby Fred Byers Robert Morris was third another two and a half lengths back as the pacemaking Greville who completed the field was a dozen lengths farther away awayGeorge George Carroll who trains Market Wise lodged the objection claiming that Whirl away took his charge wide entering the stretch However the patrol judge reported that the Wright colt was clear at the time Thats the way it appeared from the stands Market Wise started outside Whirlaway who bore out a few strides and James pulled back inside him for the challenge It was nothing to alter the result and as the objec ¬ tion was announced over the loudspeaker Jones only grinned as he stood at the colts head in the winners circle circleThe The race was like others run by Whirl away in that he was left in the early stages and buzzed to the front outside the three others in the middle of the turn But he did not gallop away from them in the stretch where he was not at any time asked for his best lick lickRUNS RUNS TEN FURLONGS IN 203 203It It was not a sensationally fast race the mile and a quarter being run in 203 though that is only twofifths of a second off Isolators track record The victory was worth 8075 and increased Whirlaways earnings to 244186 The thousands who backed him received 240 for 2 2The The turnstiles showed that 2053Y were in the throng that perspired and were downcast when the Calumet pair of Sun Again and Some Chance failed at oddson behind Re ¬ quested in the Tremont held their breath as the objection sign was flashed in the Dwyer and then cheered themselves hoarse when the officials placed their stamp of approval on Whirlaways latest accomplish ¬ ment The attendance however was not quite so large as the 20576 on hand to see last years Dwyer which produced a dis ¬ qualification qualificationMany Many notables were among those witness ¬ ing the Dwyer including Warren Wright owner of Whirlaway the result once we got rolling He will break down all the threeyearolds that keep trying to follow him himIt It was rumored that Basil James was not entirely in sympathy with trainer Carroll about the foul claimed though his mount hit Whirlaways quarters when the latter came out In the threesixteenths of a mile after the incident Market Wise tried gamely but could not even make Arcaro reach for his stick stickLittle Little time was lost at the starting point up at the top of the home lane in the Dwyer and when the break came they went away together Stout sent Greville the light weight under 116 pounds to the front while Robertson ranged Robert Morris alongside in the run to the first turn Market Wise was about a length and onehalf back of the first two and a like distance in front of the topheavy choice choiceGoing Going down the far side Whirlaway began to gather momentum and nearing the end of that lane passed Market Wise Robertson on Robert Morris saw him coming and moved to Greville with him so that the three were heads apart midway of the turn with Whirlaway on the outside Greville was the first to crack and then entering the stretch Whirlaway moved slowly to the front of Rob ¬ ert Morris Nearing the threesixteenths post Market Wise made his run runIt It did not appear that he was bothered enough to make a difference in the result when Whirlaway ducked out before him He came back inside and responded willingly but not fast enough enoughWhirlaway Whirlaway made his move easily and unhurriedly in the Dwyer in contrast to the sizzling furlongs he put in when
