DIT TAKES SUSSEX HANDICAP WITH FRONTRUNNING EFFORT EFFORTCorydon Corydon Chases Hanger Racervto Wire in Route Event at Delaware DelawareSTANTOI7 STANTOI7 Del June 21 Making all his own pace Arnold Hangers Dit trained by the veteran Max Hirsch came down from New York to carry the silks of the Ken ¬ tucky and New York sportsman to a smash ¬ ing triumph in the fifth running of the mile and a quarter Sussex Handicap here ttiis afternoon afternoonDits Dits feat was accomplished over a fast track and before a throng of about 20000 perspiring followers of the thoroughbreds who watched the program with a hot sum ¬ mer sun beating down on them relentlessly relentlesslyJohnny Johnny Gilbert had the fouryearold gelded son of Transmute and Ingrid about two and a half lengths to the good at the line as Greentree Stables Corydon took the place a halflength before Brandywine Stables Masked General J Y Christmass Rough Pass lost the show award by a nose noseOnly Only six went to the post in the Sussex and for the better part of the journey it was strictly a threehorse battle between the three members of the field which fin ¬ ished in the money positions Only Rough Pass late bid in the stretch threatened to upset the leadeis leadeisDit Dit was sent right to the front at the break and Gilbert had him showing daylight before Masked General as they raced past the grandstand the first time around the bend Maurie E Peters on Masked General was content to hold second position well into the back stretch while A1 Bodiou had Corydon in striking position running third The others were well back backMENACING MENACING CHALLENGE CHALLENGEHalf Half way through the far lane Peters sent Masked General after the leader and the Brandywine gelding winner of the Sussex of last year and the favorite of the crowd today moved up menacingly to gain almost even terms with Dit as they swept around the last bend Corydon joined in the battle arid the trio was closely aligned entering the home lane laneGilbert Gilbert however had plenty of horse un ¬ der him and on the inside saved some ground reaching the front lane Dit drew away smartly about an eighth of a mile from the line and gradually widened his margin in the run to the finish finishMasked Masked General weakened slightly from the strain of forcing Dits pace and it was then that Bodiou drove Corydon into second position The Greentree colorbearer could not really challenge Dit but managed to share lengthAs second honors a half length As for Rough Pass he did no running until reaching the halfmile ground where he was top far out of it and all his late rush accom ¬ plished was to pick up fourth money Cavalier after a brief burst of early speed dropped back and Russia never was a factor factorDit Dit was timed officially in 204 under 114 pounds It was his second score in five starts this season Dits previous victory having been in the Grey Lag Handicap in New York The winner earned 8450 to add to previous earnings this season of 12075 Those who fancied Dit in the mutuels col ¬ lected at the rate of 1030 for 2 Masked General with Corydon shouldered the top impost of 116 pounds poundsANOTHER ANOTHER FOR BILL FARNSWORTH FARNSWORTHBill Bill Farnsworth added another victory to his fine record when he drove to victory in the Winterthur Handicap fashioned for grade C performers fourth event and sup ¬ porting attraction He carried 118 pounds to victory and this included Johnny Gilbert and demonstrated that a good old horse is able to hold his own with younger oppo ¬ nents if the younger horses are asked to concede weight to a good veteran Johns Star was second and Hants third Air Bri ¬ gade the only threeyearold in the field was called upon to shoulder the top burden of 120 pounds and the Crack Brigade geld ¬ ing failed to threaten at any stage of the six furlongs furlongsSeamanlike Seamanlike came within twofifths of a track record in winning the five and one half furlongs second race for Mrs Walter M Jeffords but her Dawn Attack clipped a full second from the sixfurlong mark when he was the victor in the third race Dawn Attack with four lengths to spare ran the distance in 110 and Water Cracker was second Third went to Balloon
