Cavalrymen in Old Role Riding on Beach Patrols PatrolsVeterans Veterans Happy to Get Back On Quarter Deck of Horses HorsesSAN SAN ANGELO Texas May 22 Recently several highclass riding horses some thor ¬ oughbreds but most of them half and threequarterbred have been acquired by Col C A Wilkinson Cavalry O C South Central Remount area at San Angelo Texas and shipped to the various Coast Guard units on the Atlantic Coast and the Texas Gulf Coast Which recalls that when United States Army officials decided to mechanize the cavalry veteran yellow legs better known as cavalrymen were broken hearted Later when the Coast Guard was admitted as a mounted unit to veteran cavalrymen it looked like the end of their cherished traditions traditionsAfter After all it was not so bad for the cav ¬ alryman at that Many were worked into the Coast Guard units and today they are back on the old picket line brushing horse hairs off their liberty blues and owning up to the fact that they are about the wierdest looking horsemen a horse would ever want to see seeThings Things have come to a strange pass in ¬ deed when a man has to join the salty sea ¬ going United States Coast Guard to serve on the quarter deck of a smart old remount depot horse wear floppy dungarees instead of tailored whipcord breeches and exchange that yellow corded chin strapped campaign hat for one of those dinky little white sailor caps Veterans of boots and saddles are doing it and doing it well if Colonel Wilkinson Maj B A Trum and Humphrey Einney j former Maryland horseman now on thej Atlantic Coast with the mounted units are judges Lew Jenkins who was a cavalry ¬ man and farrier before he won the worlds lightweight title for himself and Sweet water has returned to his old job and is now a member of a beach patrol close to Front Royal Va VaThey They ride the beach in pairs each pair accompanied by a United States Army trained dog from Front Royal head of the K9 service and there is plenty of action to keep them on the alert They generally close the various beaches at sundown it is monotonous and all that but after all as the old veteran horseman says Whats the use of worryin Were back on the deck of a horse and that is enough for all of us usThe The mounted Coast Guard unit is an integral part of the defense program and horsemen in Texas are proud of the fact I that many Texasbred and Texasraised horses are seeing service j 1
