I., April 20.— After a bitterly waged stretch duel, Son of War, carrying the silks of Miss Anita King, scored a nose decision of the first division of the Taunton Purse, twin feature at Nar-1 ragansett Park this afternoon before a crowd of 10,000 patrons. Hard ridden through the final quarter mile of the six- furlong sprint. Son of War poked his nose before Mrs. F. D. Rices Hoosier at the end, while the latter took the place by a similar margin over E. J. Dalys Johnny Jr., who was third in the field of nine starters. Following the placed horses home were Miss Daunt, Madigama, Sir War, the favored Dream Parade, Conowingo and Mattie Sue. Son of War. who won a major engage-1 ment during his Florida campaign this spring, had the saddle services of Willie Turnbull and completed the distance over the fast track in 1:11%. The second section of the Taunton fell to Mrs. Jacob Freedmans Fire Warden, who was installed favorite for the dash. Mrs. H. P. Bonners Careless ran second, two and one-half lengths behind the victor and three-quarters of a length before J. H. Carrs Fair Call, who downed the five oth-rj ers meeting for minor honors, Fire Warden, ridden by Clare Ci itchfield, went to the front at the start and had no difficulty in withstanding Careless chal-g lenge. Fair Call went evenly to be third and Mint lock, who was well up to the last quarter mile, dropped back to sixth after his display of early speed.
