April 20.— Bell Buzzer, who has raced at Beulah Park for a dismissive ,050 and was acquired by Detroits D. Ferguson for ,000. tossed his hat into the Derby ring at Churchill Downs here this afternoon when he administered a decisive beating to A. C. Ernsts Alorter, Erlanger Stables Shut Up. M. B. Goffs Skytracer and several other candidates for the "Run for the Roses." Jockey Billie Thompson had the mount on the son of Bel Aethel, pegging the pace of the vaunted Skytracer and Alorter as those two engaged in a duel to the hot corner atop the stretch, where he went to Alorter as the latter put Skytracer away. In a ding-dong battle over the final furlong, Bell Buzzer was drawing off as he won by a length in the excellent time of 1:37%. The track was fast. Alorter was two and a half lengths in advance of Shut Up, who surged forward belatedly, and Skytracer was beaten another length and a half. Skytracer, runner-up in the Flamingo, broke more swiftly than usual and went scudding down the backstretch with Alorter at his throatlatch. He tired entering the stretch. The Thoroughbred Club Dinner Purse, decided in two divisions as the days nominal feature, resulted in victories for Trans-flint, a filly, carrying the colors of Owen Williams, Lexington drugstore manager, and Roi Rouge, racing for J. Warfield Rodgers, Memphis contractor. Hold Dinner in Evening Transflint went over four and a half furlongs in :542s to win in a drive while Roi Rouge hung out :53% in winning more de- cisively. Members of the Thoroughbred Club and their guests will celebrate the occasion at dinner in the Brown Hotel here tonight. Rodgers is a Thoroughbred Club member and will receive his share in the purse in War Bonds. If any funds remain in the dinner purse "jackpot" after payment of the prize awards and for the dinner, the Red Cross will be the recipient. Both ends of this rather social affair resulted unexpectedly, but Roi Rouges vic- tory was less dismaying to the favorite players than that of Transflint. He returned 0.20 after jockey George Burns kicked him into the van leaving the gate and kept him going busily in the pace throughout, finally beating David Fergusons Quintero two lengths. The latter raced greenly and finished far out in the track. Col. C. V. Whitneys defaulting filly, Fire Ship, had dead aim from the drop of the flag, but could not run down Roi Rouge at any stage. The first division of the Dinner Purse developed a good contest in which Transflint. a half-sister of the capable campaigner. Transformer, won by a half length at the direct expense of Ira Drymons Cross Bayou. Humphrey Folks favored Shreve, a half-brother of Blue Swords, finished a similar distance back in third place. Neville Dunns, cantankerous filly, Caroline Ann, who came from Keeneland preceded by a reputation for speed, delayed the start by tossing Kempton Knott and galloping up and down the backstretch several minutes before being caught up by an assistant starter. When Caroline Ann stopped. Transflint joined Cross Bayou in a skirmish for the major award with Shreve finishing steadily for third in what was his debut. 1 j 1 1 I 1 ■ J ;
