Brooks Pilots Winners of First Three Events on Churchill Downs Program Brings Home Pnut Vendor Two and OneHalf Lengths Ahead of Faras in Kakapo KakapoCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 11 Jockey Steve Brooks the McCook Nebraska saddle star stole the spotlight here today when he piloted the winners in the first three races Runnerup in 1947 for the national riding title and the lead ¬ ing reinsman at the current Downs meet ¬ ing Brooks put up a very clever ride to land Joseph A Goodwins Pnut Vendor home first in the Kakapo Purse which was one of the better offerings on the program programPnut Pnut Vendor a homebred son of Balla dier and Inundation reached the finish of the five furlongs Kakapo two and onehalf lengths before his nearest rival Clifford Mooers Faras who was six lengths in ad ¬ vance of F Spellmans Pappys Rebel third i nthe field of 10 twoyearold starters startersJockey Jockey Brooks came back in the second race to guide W J Marlmans Caumsett to a popular twolength verdict After a brief duel with Mrs G Searcys Eye for Eye in the early stretch Caumsett assumed command arid then held Michael Dants Miss Golightly safe to the finish of the one mile and a quarter test Miss Golighty had a threequarter length margin over Eye for Eye for place honors Only seven horses met in the distance offering and Caumsett second in his previous local start was favorite at slightly better than even money Running time was 209 209I I J Collins Balla Flight won his sec ¬ ond purse here in as many starts when he was up in the final furlong of the five eighths mile opener to down E A Bisch offs favored Bold Verse The latter made the pace for the major portion of the dash distance and held on gamely during the drive but could not withstand the winner although she was much the best of the others Mrs E Ferris Dicks Boy finished third in the field of six twoyearold starters startersBalla Balla Flight hard ridden by Steve Brooks completed his task over the firm footing in 100 and second choice in the wagering returned backers odds of 5 to 2 2The The Goodwin colt who ran second in his only previous start to Slick Pigeon was backed down to 6 to 5 in the straight tote pool and he mad good in impressive fash ¬ ion Phut Vendor cut out his own pace and sped the Kakapo distance in 100 com ¬ mendable time over the Downs footing footingStarter Starter Ruby White dispatched the Kak ¬ apo Purse band in good alignment and Pnut Vendor assumed command at once Brooks then permitted the ultimate winner to mpve along steadily before Faras while Tuned Up and Pappys RebeJ followed within striking distance of the pacemaker pacemakerApproaching Approaching the stretch Faras made a aContinued Continued on Page Three Brooks Astride First Three Winners on Churchill Card CardContinued Continued from Page One Onegame game but futile challenge and Brooks then shook up Pnut Vendor who responded with fine speed and easily held sway in the run to the final marker Faras could not menace the flying Goodwin colt but was easily best of the others while Pappys Rebel saved the short end of the purse by a half length margin over Tuned Up who gave a sharp effort effortA A good crowd turned out for the racing and the earlier events on the program were decided under clear skies Half way through the card heavy cloud banks drifted over the course and there was a threat of rain Temperatures in the Falls City area rose to new levels and humidity was high
