Cranwood Park Idle to Thoroughbred Sport Since 1932 Opens 19Day Meet Eight Entered Overnight For Inaugural To Limit Fields to Nine Starters StartersCRANWOOD CRANWOOD PARK Cleveland Ohio May 11 After having been idle to the thoroughbred sport since 1932 this completely rejuvenated halfmile plant will be host to turf fans from the Cleveland area for 19 days beginning tomorrow and does the honor of opening the 1948 Ohio racing season The meeting will be sponsored by the Cranwood Racing Association which organization is headed by general manager G W Lewis and president C W Tipling Both of these men have figured promi ¬ nently in racing in this sector of the state for a number of years Lewis is familiar with fans from here through his association with Thistle Down and Tipling is owner of the Cranwood property and has been connected with racing here for some time timeLewis Lewis who arrived here Saturday from Detroit Mich where he is general manager of the Fair Grounds race track intends to remain to view tomorrows inaugural card and plans have been made to handle a capacity crowd The Cranwood course lo ¬ cated on Miles Avenue 11 miles southeast from the heart of Cleveland and only a half mile from the Thistle Down track has been practically rebuilt in recent weeks to stage this meeting meetingAmong Among the many improvements made totalisator These machines have been used major attention Replacing the former sys ¬ tem of mutuel clerks issuing tickets by hand the electrotote is a mechanical de ¬ vice which automatically records a mutuel ticket very similar to that produced by the Totalisator These machines have been used with marked success at both the Detroit Fair Grounds and River Downs in Cincin ¬ nati The teleregister a subsidiary of Western Union and constructed in New York has also been installed and is supple ¬ mentary to the electrotote The teleregis ¬ ter is employed for more rapid calculation of approximate odds on each starter starterWith With the opening of Cranwood Park to ¬ morrow a ruling recently instituted by the Ohio State Racing Commission goes into effect which permits an apprentice rider a sevenpound allowance when riding for his contract employer The usual five pounds can be claimed by an apprentice when rid ¬ ing for anyone other than his employer This marks the first time in the history of racing in Ohio that more than a fivepound allowance has been permitted to be claimed Post time tomorrow and throughout the meeting which ends June 2 will be at 215 p m Eastern Daylight Saving Time The first and second races have been designated to form the Daily Double wagering pool Fields will be limited to nine starters with races carded daily dailyFeatured Featured on tomorrows program is the appropriately named The Cranwood Inau ¬ gural Handicap Eight horses including an entry accepted the weight assignments of racing secretary and handicapper L J Giles in the headliner which will be decided at six furlongs and offers a purse of 1500 Posted as the sixth race the Cranwood In ¬ augural attracted the entry of B A Rey ¬ nolds Miss Tanya 108 H H Fausetts Grey Days 107 Mrs B Neilons Princess Eliza 103 Sierra Ancha 111 and All Free 117 coupled as running mates for the part ¬ nership of Hall Fetzer H Ruperts Pink Chance 105 Harry Sneidermans Jois 105 and A Eaglings Noble Play 105
