William Mikel Veteran Turfman Dies at 87 87Trained Trained Horses Over 50 Years Had Farm at Carlock III IIICHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 11 William Mikel 87 years old and believed to be one of the oldest turfmen who was still active up to the time of his passing died yesterday afternoon at his Louisville apartment A stable of his thor ¬ oughbreds are presently quartered at Churchill Downs and the deceased horse ¬ man had been a daily visitor to the course until his demise demiseIn In recent years Mikel turned most of the training chores of his stable over to his son J D Mikel and he had devoted much of his time to his thoroughbred breeding farm which is located near Carlock Illinois The stallion Hypocrite stands at the Mikel nursery and the horse begot several useful performers that successfully carried the Mikel silks silksHypostyle Hypostyle a threeyearold homebred went to the post here during the current meeting and won a sixfurlong sprint An ¬ other horse in the Mikel stable that cam ¬ paigned quite well during his career is Hot and High who was a good winner during previous Churchill Downs meetings Hot and High was defeated in two starts here this season Hypostyle won three straight races in Florida before his shipment to Kentucky Mikel had been a horse trainer for more than 50 years and he was well known throughout the country having raced his charges at nearly all of the more important tracks In late years Mikel cam ¬ paigned his horses hi Kentucky during the spring and fall meetings and in Chicago through the summer spending the winter months at Florida tracks tracksBesides Besides his son J D Mikel the deceased is survived by a daughter Mrs E Drillon who is now racing a stable in California two grandchildren three great grandchild ¬ ren and four greatgreat grandchildren Funeral services and burial will take place in El Paso Illinois according to announce ¬ ment here today
