Interest in Two Detroit WeekEnd Races Mounts MountsSun Sun Herod and Sir Sprite Likely Contestants in Cross Country CountryFAIR FAIR GROUNDS Detroit Mich June 9 Interest is running high at the Motor City course over the features to be offered on Saturday when two handicaps will di ¬ vide top billing on the excellent program arranged by racing secretary Charles F Henry These are the Cross Country Hand ¬ icap for threeyearolds and upward at one mile over the turf course for a prize of 7500 and the Sport of Kings at six furlongs exclusively for threeyearolds which is endowed with a purse of 10000 10000In In addition to other topnotch members of the handicap division it may be that the Cross Country will find engaged Gris som Shermans Man o War Handicap winner Sun Herod and O F Woodwards Sir Sprite who is fresh from consecutive tallies in the Motor City and the Col Alger Handicaps The meeting of this pair is accompanied by a keen rivalry as both are considered stout prospects for local cham ¬ pionship honors The Cross Country carries additional interest also as it marks the first time this season that members of the handicap division will meet over the popu ¬ lar grass course courseThere There are several reasons that the Sport of Kings looms particularly attractive It Js likely that most of the sophomores who competed in the Decoration Day Handicap won by Henry Forrests Cotton Joe will be brought back in an attempt to alter that order of finish Here O F Woodwards fleet Hilda who went down to a favorites defeat in the Decoration Day may attempt to regain her position as leader of the threeyearold division To the starting field may be added Grissom Shermans Arkansas Derby winner Fertile Lands LandsTomorrows Tomorrows program offers no standout feature as the members of the handicap division are in idleness in preparation for Saturdays specials Threeyearolds are matched at six furlongs under claiming conditions to provide a nominal feature which is titled the Ed Hopper HopperSamuel Samuel J Browns Coiffeur appears nicely placed in the Hopper The daughter of Hairan was a smashing second at last asking and won her previous race turning back among others Mrs J L Chesneys Heine who is named to oppose her again Eual Wyatts Mels Chic has been named for the Hopper and this Chicuelo filly earns respect for her chance on the strength of her victory last trip postward when she de ¬ feated two of her rivals here
