JUDGES STAND 1 By Charles Hatton 1 1Wests Wests Fillies Point for Arlington T C Piatt Preps Babes for Three Sales Donitas First Filly Is Impressive Princequillo Beginning Well as Sire SireLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky June 9 9Middle Middle West turf clubs offer no threeyearold filly event of much significance between the Kentucky Oaks on April 30 and the 25000 Princess Doreen Stakes at Arlington on June 23 The sport then becomes more glamorous Bob Klebergs wellbred Scattered who is by Whirlaway out of Imperatrice is quite the most accomplished of the fillies at the moment what with the Pimlico and C C A Oaks to her credit She seems to have been well bought as a 23000 yearling Max Hirsch may ship Scattered to Arlington for one or two stakes as he did But Why Not and Athene Calumets Bewitch and Whirl Some have been rather conspicuous by their absence and one or both may inject an in ¬ teresting element into proceedings at the North Side course Whirl Some came down with a cough the night of the big wind at Keeneland where Bewitch came out of a hard race in the Ashland with a sore shin Of the fillies active here in the Mid West several have a smattering of class Back Talk was flirting for the Kentnucky Oaks and since has run well Hang Up did not run at two owing to a cracked hoof and is an improving sort Silly Gyp had speed enough to run Bewitch to a photo The fact that the plater Flitabout was second in the CCA Oaks isnt very flattering to the Easts fillies and there are some hasty conclusions about them local Sale of select yearlings the Saratoga Sales and the Keeneland Fall Sales We saw them at Crestwood this morning and they are straight and sleek The first Ocean Waves will be offered this summer and Piatt has a smart colt out of the hardhitting Blondella in the July auctions In the group he will ship to The Spa for the Villa Farm are a colt by Beau Pere from Twilight Tears halfsister Sun Lady and a filly by Beau Pere from the good mare Leslie Grey The talent scouts are particularly keen about the colt It is perhaps stubborn of us to prefer a bay filly by Shut Out from Donitas First Bull Hancock has an apt expression when a pedigree pleases him I feel this one is some kin to me is the way he puts it itChatting Chatting of the turf sport Piatt says I dont know if it is the fault of the breeders or bad racetracks or impatient trainers or perhaps a little of each but it seems to me that an unusual number of horses are going wrong Reflecting on this a mo ¬ ment he recalled When I was breaking yearlings for Preston Burch they were galloped and educated for three months before anybody clucked to them I think this gave them a chance Calumets now are given such a course which may explain the fact so many perform like veterans in their first starts By the way the Villa Farm has a really enviable stud of mares at Crestwood These are Sun Lady Big Harvest Donitas First Donita Mf Leslie Grey Maria Christina Mrs Ames Sarongirl Theme Song and Valiente Leslie Grey is out of Theme Song and Donitas First Maria Christina and Valiente are out of Donita M Valiente is a fouryearold by Bull Dog that has won and she only joined the stud a few days ago to be bred in 49 Donita M is rearing a chestnut filly foal by Whirlaway and has been bred to Mahmoud She and Donitas First are respectively the bosses of the foaling mares and the barren mares and Donitas Firsts Shut Out filly tried to kick the man whofoaled her as soon as she could stand It was this spirit which impelled Donitas First to challenge a pacemaking stallion she could not see for being blinded by a flying clod and when her knees were biting her at every stride It is one of the bravest incidents we know and gave us a profound respect for the 1944 Beldame Princequillo seems to be making a good beginning as a sire The Claiborne Farm records show that he has had five twoyearold starters up to now Of this number one has won two others have placed another finished third Princequillo serves at the noted Paris stud under an arrangement with Prince Dmitri Djordjadze The eight year old son of the French stayer Prince Rose was foaled in Eire by the Papyrus mare Cosquilla as we re ¬ call He is one of a rare few tail male St Simon horses now in the U S Princequillos peculiar distinction is that he could sprint six furlongs in 111 and still won the Saratoga and Jockey Club Gold Cups CupsTurf Turf ana E B Benjamin was a recent visitor to Paris to inspect the three broodmares Edifield Beautified and Pedes ¬ trian he has at Claiborne Pedestrian is the dam of a Count Fleet yearling colt Punctual vans are important to breeders Because of a tardy one a mare will not foal in 49 Errards foals all have quarters which suggest they will run fast Crestwood Farm has a mare with Hastings blood unusually close up This is Epingle by Epinard out of Battle by Hastings
