Success of Whitaker Racers in Stakes Focuses Attention on Hurstland Farm Texans Fine Stock Boards At Midland Ky Nursery Maintained by C Nuckols NuckolsLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Kyf June 18 B F Whitakers New York stake successes this year have focused attention on the place from whence they came It has been Whit akers policy for a number of years to race only those horses which he has bred Al ¬ though he hails from the land where every ¬ thing is bigger and better Texas he keeps his small but select stock on Hurstland Farm at Midway Ky Hurstland Farm has been owned and operated by its present owner Charles Nuckols for the past 30 years Nuckols three sons have assisted him in his work for six or seven of the 30 30One One of Nuckols first purchases after entering the thoroughbred sport was the mare Anna Horton for whom he paid the grand sum of 5 she has since produced the stakes winners Spanish Play Rust and the stakes producers Earlianna and Step inanna dam of Fighting Step best three yearold colt of 1945 Nuckols still has two of Anna Hortons producing daughters on his place they are Miss Anna C and Susan Constant Over the years including Anna Horton the best producing mares that Nuckols has had are the mares Het ¬ erodyne Cousin Jo and Gay OMar the dam of the sire Jacomar They are all still producing with the exception of Anna Horton HortonThe The young sire Littletown who is by Jamestown out of Little Wichita by Royal Ford twice made the speedy Occupation eat his dust Littletown stands at Hurst ¬ land and if his first crop is an indicator he should do well at stud From his first crop Littletown sired 10 winners put of 12 starters and two of the 10 won stakes Frenchtowns one of the two stakes win ¬ ners dam is to be returned to his court this year Littletown showed good speed in the only year he raced having run the fastest times for the year at Arlington Park in two of his races racesIn In addition to Whitakers stock Nuckols also boards horses for several other inter ¬ ests such as the Randon Farm and the estate of Henry L Salisbury Salisburys horses will be sold this year at the Lexing ¬ ton Fall Sales Among the mares to be sold in the lot will be Sparkling Maid who won 13 races in two seasons of racing Her dam is the good producer Peggoty Ann and her sire is a horse called Baimwawa It seems that Peggoty Ann became un trainable in Cuba and so it was decided to breed her there Sparkling Maid was the result and is the only registered foal to race for her sire sireThe The starboarder at Hurstland is Suga pud whose first foal is the honest racer My Request Sugapuds dam Albania is no mean producer herself having foaled in addition to Sugapud the stakes winners Carolyn A and Chief Barker Albania has a yearling this year by Mahmoud and is in foal to Requested Sugapud has a wean ¬ ling full sister to My Request who is at the present time a superior looking filly Whitakers plans for next year include re ¬ tiring Carolyn A to the stud where she will join her dam and halfsister halfsisterHurstland Hurstland is not supported on horses alone as there are in addition to the usual livestock found on a horse farm 135 head of sheep Many horsemen think it inad ¬ visable to let sheep graze the same land as cattle and horses going under the as ¬ sumption that horses and cattle do not fare so well on fields that sheep have habited The squires of Midway have proved this theory erroneous profiting both from the excellence of their sheep and horses At the Lexington livestock sales the Nuckols consignment of sheep topped the sales average averaging 2750 a hundred which is a high figure anywhere anywhereCharles Charles Nuckols Sons will offer 11 yearlings at the Breeders Sales Companys vendues this July Among the more inter ¬ esting of the yearlings is the first foal by Devil Diver The yearling is a wellcon ¬ formed filly out of Littletowns dam Little Witchita An interesting experiment was performed at Hurstland this year when Birds Nest the dam of Fighting Don had her foal taken away from her at birth was then given a transfusion and put to nurse on a nurse mare Birds Nest has had three jaundiced foals prior to foaling this year and Dr Magee advised this method as a prevention The foal is doing well and shows signs of being perfectly normal This year several other breeders have tried the experiment with equally good results so that jaundiced foals in the future will not be the total loss that they once were wereCharles Charles Nuckols three sons Charles Hi and Alfred are well on their way in the horse business and are all held in high esteem jn the thoroughbred business for the inherent knowledge that they have of horses Charles the oldest son was em ¬ ployed the past two seasons as a patrol judge at the Keeneland meeting he per ¬ formed his job well along with helping his father and brothers to run Hurstland
