Moran, a veteran with the Downs staff, was a crack rider in his younger days and he now is considered one of the best of his chosen profession. Joe, who has watched so many Derbies from the back of his saddle horse, has a few favorites among the former winners of the rich three-year-old classic. In discussing the previous renewals of the stakes, he pointed out the following horses as truly great performers: "Whirlaway and Citation were the best in the later years," he said, "but Count Fleet also was a grand individual." Others Joe spoke of in high terms were Reigh Count, Twenty Grand, Black Gold, Gallant Fox and, one of the finest of them all, Exterminator.
