CARELESS JONES assumed command at once, turned back the initial challenge of CALATER after a half mile, then withstood that ones final bid. CALATER was always a factor, but was unsuccessful in his efforts to displace the top one. PENOCC loomed a threat from the outside in the early stretch and weakened. NICODEM raced forwardly placed, but lacked a menacing rally. JAZERANT faltered in the final quarter. SAIL CLOTH failed to reach contention. BOLD BEAUTY turned in a dull effort. WAR RHODES was outrun. OEDIPUS, hard held during the first mile, lacked sufficient rally to menace the winner. GENANCOKE set and pressed the pace for almost a mile and a half and weakened. I ELKRIDGE was within striking distance while trailing early, fenced well, but lacked a rally when roused. ! TOURIST LIST weakened badly after racing with the pace for more than a mile. CER VANTES, hard held while his stablemate set a good pace, was perfectly handled while commencing his rally and drew clear through the stretch to win easily. JITTERS, allowed to race on his own courage for the first mile, moved willingly when roused, but was no match. FIFTY-FIVE outfinished the others. SNOWFLARES, rated for a mile and a half, was forced wide while rallying with CER VANTES, then flattened out in the stretch run. The latter set a good pace under rating and held on extremely well. RELIC GOLD was forced to race wide while rallying and lacked a sufficient stretch rally. AMERICAN NED outsprinted the opposition to the first turn to save ground from his rail position, was well rated and responded well to good urging to withstand the extended drive of COUNTER PLOT. The latter was always with the winner, but was not good enough. PREACHER, always formidable, rallied through the stretch and hung right at the end. ROBERTO could not untrack himself in the slippery going. WHITE HAWK weakened. DONNA BOORSE showed nothing. INFIRST was outrun. Overweight— American Ned, 5 pounds; Donna Boorse, 2; King Pomp, 1.
