Kentucky Citizens Irked Over Charges ChargesWill Will Remain Loyal to Coach And Players Demand Proof ProofThrough i Investigationi Through Real Investigation InvestigationBy By RICHARD COLEMAN COLEMANUnited United Press Sports Writer WriterLOUISVILLE LOUISVILLE Ky May 1 Kentucky citizens who love the brand of basketball played in their Blue Grass state couldnt bring themselves to believe today that the University of Kentucky athletic program has been as corrupt as charged by New York Judge Saul Streit StreitMost Most basketball fans here and hi Lexing ¬ ton home of the university were ready to concede that Kentucky has followed the same general policy toward recruiting of athletes as other large universities But they were angered by some of the accusa ¬ tions in Judge Streits 63page blast against the university and coach Adqlph Rupp RuppUntil Until there is proof and a real investi ¬ gation were sticking by our players and our coach was the general tone of the angry comment in Kentucky KentuckySome Some of the states leading newspapers caught the public feeling in editorials to ¬ day dayThe The states largest newspaper the Louis ¬ ville CourierJournal heard the charges of Judge Streit and called for a thorough in ¬ vestigation if and that is the big word if the charges are true But as the papers editorial writer summed it up at present we have no way of knowing how many of Judge Streits charges are true trueEditorial Editorial Upholds Officials OfficialsAt At Lexington where the university is located the editorial charges that the judge has used some tricky association of ideas to paint university athletic activities in the worst possible light The editorial goes on Kentuckians know that contami ¬ nation of athletes certainly has not been condoned by university officials and we know too that coach Rupp and other U of K officials tried to protect athletes from exploitation by gamblers gamblersThe The Herald added that the basketball scandals were not the result of any condi ¬ tion peculiar to Kentucky but said that some of Judge Streits criticism was way off base baseLexington Lexington townspeople themselves re ¬ fused to call for sweeping changes in the athletic program They believe the situa ¬ tion whatever it might be could have been corrected on the campus and not dragged into a New York court house Most of them queried on the subject seemed to feel Rupp had been made to bear the brunt of Streits attack unfairly unfairlyTownspeople Townspeople criticize the universitys handling of the situation and what they believe to be smear tactics by the New York district attorneys office in publiciz ¬ ing the Kentucky angle of the fixes fixesState State Senator Louis D Cox of nearby Frankfort president of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association defended the position of Kentuckys alumni in the mat ¬ ter terThe The alumni association has done noth ¬ ing to demoralize the university athletics he said He called coach Rupp a fine gentleman and said he did not believe him wrongdoingJudge to be guilty of any wrongdoing Judge Streits charges are exaggerated Cox said The alumni will continue to expect winning basketball teams There is nothing wrong with gifts given to players such as watches when no distinction is made between individuals individualsThe The Kernel the university student news ¬ paper printed an editorial today stating its views In summation the editor specifi ¬ cally recommended that Rupp be allowed to present his side of the case at the next meeting with the athletic board
