JUDGES STAND 1 By Charles Hatton Real Delight OnetoBeat for Rich Oaks Gluck Outlines Plans for Elmendorf Farm Mameluke Adds Interest to Spring Handicaps Master Fiddles Dam Bargain for Delaney DelaneyCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 1 Not quite all the racing news here in Derby town pertains to the activities of Hill Gail and his somewhat intimidated rivals though of course they are the focal point of interest For ex ¬ ample entries were taken today for the Ken ¬ tucky Oaks which is itself 78 years old and has come to be known and coveted as a sort of Derby for Fillies Indications are that Calumet will start the favorite also in this 25000 fixture in the rangy form of Real Delight a rheumatic bay countrylooking filly who is expected to have the saddle ser ¬ vices of one E Arcaro and won the Ashland with her ears pricked She was beaten once by a colt but that was a bit of a fluke in horsewise hard boots opinion If you sup ¬ pose from this that a reversal for Mrs Wriehts leeev filly will come as a surprise you are quite correct The first aid room will be crowded with people being administered for shock financial anemia and a bad favorite phobia Perhaps the most noteworthy development relevant to the Derby today was Bill Winfreys decision to ship Cousin forthwith to New York with a recommendation that Alfred Vanderbilt turn him out several weeks at Sagamore I will use him for a pony for a while when I first take him up riding him myself with a big stock saddle Winfrey said When and if he acts as if he wants to be a race horse I will train him again Not all the racing news here in Derbytown today pertains to horses per se The TRAs public relations committee met here yesterday and vigorously and properly opposed the FCCs im ¬ plied censorship of telecasts arid broadcasts i of outstanding turf events This has been challenged as discriminatory and an infringement on the freedom of the press pressElmendorf Elmendorf is an old farm with new ideas and a new owner in Max H Gluck who has acquired the historic nursery its blue bookish mares yearlings and foals from Tink Veale and Sam Costello Glucks varied business in ¬ terests include a chain of retail stores and real estate enterprises extending from coast to coast He has a small string of three horses Discreet Alls Fair and Blue Moon racing in New York under the direction of trainer j Cole man now is entering the sport on a large scale We are eventually going to build Elmendorf up to the point that high class horses will be the normal expectancy he said today I have told Lou Doherty to gradually acquire such mares as he desires hi order to reach that goal I know that several of the marcs I have just purchased are excellent prospects hut I feel that others must be ob ¬ tained and that constant culling must be practiced if we are to get to the fop Gluck impresses us as a man who is in racing to stay and one who will only be content if he is hi the top division Under the progressive Dohertys management Elmendorf proved a most profitable invest ¬ ment for Veale and Costello during their two years of ownership And it seems to us Gluck has the nucleus of a high class stud The 27 mares include the stakes winners Meggy Grillette Drury Lane Aladear Miss Alesia Ariel Song and Countess Wise the stakes producers Chalara Blois Charlotte Girl Wayabout and Greeny and the good winners Laurentia Anatolia Shoe Buckle and Unwise Seventeen of the mares are 10 years old or younger Their 15 yearlings are by such sires as Pavot Phalanx Revoked and Spy Song SongChurchill Churchill Downs railbirds are wondering how good Mameluke may be this spring The rheumatic colt who carried six splints into last place in the 51 Derby underwent a rehabilitation pro ¬ gram at Whitney Farm and in his first start since the Belmont Stakes indicated he may be a factor in spring handicaps He was not made eligible for the seventyeighth Clark here but is in the Metropolitan and Suburban at Belmont Park Whereas Mameluke used to require four or five furlongs to warm out of his soreness he was very supple in the Douglas Park Purse and obviously could have taken the track at the outset Indulging The Gink for a quarter he opened up and won with contemptu ¬ ous ease Details of Mamelukes reconditioning have not been divulged but farm manager Tom Veitch has observed that If it proves effective it may help all of us Meanwhile Mamelukes form lends additional interest to the spring handicaps over East EastTurf Turf ana Veale and Costello will continue to race their horsesintraining and maintain their interest in Phalanx and other sires for the foreseeable future Jack Delaney acquired Marsh Marigold dam of Master Fiddle and Caltha IP foal to Super Duper for about 4700 and to
