Weighing In By EVAN SHIPMAN SHIPMANBELMONT BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y May 1 Countess Jane and Emardee both trained by members of the Odom family had each taken a divi ¬ sion of the recent Rose dale Stakes at Jamaica and each had run the five furlongs in an identical 59 Conse ¬ quently there was some discussion as to which of these attractive fil ¬ lies was the best and their meeting in yes ¬ terdays fiftythird re ¬ newal of the Fastiion was awaited with keen interest Before the start of the Belmont feature public favor veered slightly in favor of Emardee but when it came to the run down the Widener chute Countess Jane was on top while Emardee was fourth Alfred G Vanderbilts HomeMade and Hal Price HeadleyV Aerolite splitting them at the finish It was a smart race the first nine of the 11 starters winding up in a compact group with the last of the nine only four lengths off Countess Jane The latter probably looking for a turn did not run as straight as she might have crossing from the middle of the track to the inner rail but she showed fine speed wore down her rivals with authority in the drive and then offered a stubborn and successful re ¬ sistance to HomeMades rush She con ¬ ceded HomeMade four pounds This field of wellbred fillies made a pretty picture and it may well be that several in addition to Countess Jane will turn out to be good Heir presumptive a short while ago Cousin now looks like just another poor relation Sound and fit his tempera ¬ ment is that of a striker In recent starts this Disappointing colt has refused to ex ¬ tend himself and the Vanderbilt stable has decided to pass up the Derby Only those who were at Saratoga last summer will realize just how good this fellow can be when in a generous mood His record at the Spa was splendid but when re ¬ turned to Long Island with the Belmont Futurity as his objective Cousin went slightly amiss for trainer Bill Winfrey his autumn form down here being but a shadow of what he had shown previously Brought along very carefully in California last winter and quite recovered Cousin seemed on the point of justifying the stables ambitions at Jamaica but the Wood Memorial it is now plain was the same attitude toward his afternoon task What can you do with a horse like that You can wait and maybe time and patience will effect a change Or you can geld him That might help although gelding did not re ¬ form The Chief another notable one who had bees in his bonnet bonnetHow How can you go beyond Hill Gail in look ¬ ing for a logical winner of the Derby Cal ¬ umets big handsome son of Bull Lea the farms great sire has done everything asked of him since he captured the Santa Anita Derby It is evident he possesses a world of speed and we have never heard it hinted that he will not stay the Derby route The only criticism of Hill Gail that ever caused his partisans to hesitate had to do with his manners and the Jones train ¬ ing plus Atkinsons and Arcaros riding seem to have solved that problem The friends and connections of Blue Man have been saying little but on paper this is the one who might upset the favorite and who should in any event force him out Blue Man it should not be forgotten had to run only a furlong to dispose of his field in the second edition of the Experimental Nearly last at the far corner he moved so fast when Conn McCreary let go of his head that he was actually in front when they turned for home It was all o ver in that short distance A colt capable of that much brush and who can use it in the right place and who has the heart to stay over a route is always dangerous and can never be lightly dismissed dismissedJack Jack Ryan had saddled Clive of India to capture the first hurdle race of the Belmont season on Tuesday and yester ¬ day the same capable horseman sent out Master Mariner to win the initial steeplechase on the 36day program Both Clive of India and Master Mariner scored with something in hand but the five pounds the latter was receiving from Beigan McKinneys Cicas the strong choice in the chase may have helped Cicas with Dooley Adams in the saddle cut out a quick pace in this race while Pat Smithwickhad Master Mariner under strong restraint taking him back fre ¬ quently and asking him for anything only when he moved to the leader just before reaching the final turn Once caught it appeared as if Cicas must be all done On the contrary McKinneys five year old came again and was still a threat to take it all at the last obstacle Ryan sent out another promising fencer in the firsttime starter Golden Furlong who ran coupled with the winner and wound up a good third This fouryear old fenced well for his debut and was always a factor He will be heard from Now that trainer Frank Catrone has an ¬ nounced Spartan Valors absence from the Dixie Handicap field we imagine the Mary ¬ land race will see an interesting resump ¬ tion of the rivalry between Alerted and Auditing This pair finishing in Spartan Valors wake in the recent sensational Gal ¬ lant Fox Handicap at Jamaica may not be of the stature to trouble that champion but they are two keen hardhitting colts who never give the impression that they are aware of the location of the finish line Both have been well treated by the handi capper or so it seems to us and we pre ¬ dict they will give such higher weighted candidates as County Delight Pilaster and Be Fleet plenty of trouble As a footnote we may add that this renewal of the Dixie may eventuate in a family feud as County Delight Be Fleet and Auditing are all sons of Count Fleet
