Nine Sophomores Seek John Alden AldenEpic Epic King and Miss Joanne Test Speed at Six Furlongs In Suffolk Downs Main Event EventBy By AVERY BROWN BROWNStaff Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS East Boston Mass June 12 Tomorrows third running of the 10000 John Alden Handicap has attract ¬ ed a field of nine fleet sophomores six of whom are eligible for the richer Yankee Handicap to be run here next Wednesday There is a good possibility that at least three of those entered in tomorrows six furlong feature will be sent back in the ninefurlong Yankee Mrs J H Woodstocks Epic King is the actual top weight of the John Alden with his 120 pounds but on the scale Jim Grieves Miss Joanne 118 pounds will be giving three pounds to her rival Epic King has been somewhat of a disappoint ¬ ment in his earlier races at this seaside track but snapped a losing streak last Saturday by taking top honors in the Commonwealth Handicap In winning the grass race at about a mile and a sixteenth the threeyearold gelding established the track recorded now standing at 147 Jockey Evan Jenkins who rode Epic King in his recent score will again be in the saddle saddleMiss Miss Joanne winner of the Faneuil Hall Handicap run under the same conditions as the John Alden did not fancy the grass course while competing in the Common ¬ wealth but is expected to be a stout con ¬ tender in tomorrows event on the main track In three starts over the main track the Challenge Me filly has a second and another win in addition to the Faneuil Hall victory Dick McLaughlin who is riding in top form is scheduled to ride t e Grieve miss missBegan Began Campaign Well WellC C H Everitts Supremes Bub began his New England campaign in sensational fashion winning two straight against top ¬ flight opposition The bay colt had piled up a consistent score at Oaklawn this past spring winning a pair and finishing sec ond in his other two outings His form formfell fell off after his good start at Suffolk Downs with a couple of mediocre efforts and he was given a brief respite respiteNow Now freshened for a try at the big money in the Yankee it is expected that Supremes Bub will be a solid rival with Paul Ward handling hi min the John Alden under an impost of 117 pounds Mrs M J Bresnahan Jrs Domquil as ¬ signed 116 for tomorrows test ranks with the top sprinters of all ages to display their speed at Suffolk Downs this season Jack Amiels Sun Warrior who made the trip to Suffolk along with his older stablemate Count Turf who finished a creditable third in the recent Massachu ¬ setts Handicap may prove the stumbling block for the aspiring local threeyearolds in the John Alden The Sun Again Beth Bon colt has been competing against the top sprinters in the sophomore ranks on the metropolitan circuit and has fared very well Aside from his last appearance which was the Peter Pan Handicap at a mile Sun Warrior has won twice was second once and third on two other occasions occasionsG G S Colellas Delivery Boy in the hand ¬ icap with 112 pounds can not be over ¬ looked The bay son of Side Boy Deliver has won three times since shipping North from a New Orleans campaign and in his most recent outing was very impressive Leo Valdes his regular rider will be up The above named sextet are eligible for forthe the mile and a furlong Yankee and to morrows dash should not hinder their theirchances chances of starting in the richer event
