JUDGES STAN D By CHARLES HATTON CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 3 California racing inter ¬ ests may point with pride to Andy Crevolins Determine who is a prod ¬ uct of West Coast competition though he was bred in Kentucky Saturdays Derby developed along roughhouse lines with 17 starters but it was clear enough Determine won oecause he was the best horse at least that day It is presently planned to fly him back to the West Coast on Wednesday to await the pretentious Hollywood Park meeting In other quarters of the press trainer Molter was quoted to the effect he would be retired But this was in error the Californian observing this morning he hoped to race the colt later this season and at four five and six West Coast bloodstock interests may be bene ¬ fited if eventually Determine is retired to stud there Though his sire Alibhai and his dam Koubis never raced he is a beautifully bred colt Koubis is by Mah moud out of Brown Biscuit who is Seabiscuits half sister and this is the immediate family also of Equipoise one introduced into America by Balancoire n and devel ¬ oped at the Whitney Stud Also Determine who was bred by Dr Eslie Asbury near Carlisle Ky is a first foal And first foals chances of achieving racing suc ¬ cess are supposed to be compromised by a lack of size Barely 15 hands Determine was the smallest of the Derby field but he ran the biggest race There was in Satur ¬ days Derby more honor for the magnificent stallion Hy ¬ perion For both Determine and Hasseyampa who was third are by his son Alibhai In past years immediately after the Derby dust had settled it was on to Pimlico and the Preakness for many of the field The runnerup Hasty Road and the fourth t finish Goyamo were clos ¬ est of the Preakness prospects at the end of the Derby Determine distance he was going to win both that event and the Derby Trial except for Determine This is a commentary on some ¬ thing or other and he could be more formidable at the shorter Preakness distance A A ACorrelation Correlation an unfortunate of the Derby strikes us as another Californian who is admirably suited for an oppor ¬ tunity at stud His sire Free America is by the classic sure Blenheim n out of Columbiana who distinguished her ¬ self as a Widener winner His dam Braydore a grand ¬ daughter of Roi Herode whose name appears in Geishas pedigree now is 24 It is not usual for mares to produce performers of Correlations caliber at her advanced age Braydore was imported from England where she was a winner at two three and four She produced many win ¬ ners including the stakes winners Interpretation and Diamond Miss before rearing the Lytle colt Free Ameri ¬ ca is among the more interesting young Blenheim n stallions now in service in this country He is presently owned by a syndicate in California serving at the Old English Ranch Correlation incidentally is bred a bit like the Aga Khans Beigler Bey one of the prominent candi ¬ dates for French Derby honors There was a time in American racing when an occasional performer ran anon Nelson Dunstan is traveling His column will be resumed Thursday ymously identified only by his pedigree and for a while owner Lytle was beginning to think he might be obliged to race Correlation as the Braydore colt Countless names were submitted and rejected by The Jockey Club registrar One was Mr Bob for himself Finally he borrowed a professional term Lytle is a petroleum engi ¬ neer and in his businsss on speaks of correlating the core of one well with that of another The California sportsman hoping the colt would fare as successfully as Interpretation applied for and was granted Correlation CorrelationA A A A AJohn John Schapiro here for the Kentucky Derby is off soon to England to see the Epsom original and from there goes to Paris His goodwill missions and successful pres ¬ entation of the International have made Laurel as well known across the Atlantic as it is here Chatting of Euro ¬ pean racing it occurred to us that the International is staged more like the Arc de Triomphe than any other classic we have seen and is seems Schapiro adopted some of its features from the Longchamp event It is much too early of course to discuss prospects for the next Inter ¬ national at this time but in England the Laurel executive will visit Newmarket and scout some of the talent there We are going to be interested to note how Belmonts In ¬ ternational Steeplechase turns out This event could well be the best thing which has ever happened to this pic ¬ turesque phase of the spprt in our country
