Sportsmans Park Notebook Fans Brave Inclement Weatier To View Their Favorite Sport By J J MURPHY SPORTSMANS PARK Cicero HI May 4 Although the frost was nipping at their noses on both Monday and Tuesday the loyal patrons of Sportsmans Park turned out in larger numbers than expected much to the pleasure of the management who are hoping that this seasons spring session will come up to that of the first meet ¬ ing of last year in at ¬ tendance and pari mutuel business At present it is running several points behind in both departments However with the re ¬ turn of sunshine as predicted by r the weather prophets later in the week an up The cold spell has not seemed to affect the horses to any great extent and they have been running fairly well to form In a few instances favorites have refused to etend themselves but it was ever thus all of which makes the thoroughbred sport the speculative game that it is If the choices won all the events beating the races would be just like shooting fish in a barrel It is rather unusual that in the 11 races at one mile and onesixteenth decided here to date this season only two public choices have been successful As a general rule the racing is more f ormf ul over a distance than in sprints That is the jockeys have a bet ¬ ter opportunity to place their charges in the early running and make their moves And there is more chance for a horse or a jockey to overcome interference interferenceA A A A AGetting Getting back to the weather the temp ¬ erature slid to freezing here early this morning for the first time in history on this date It has been noted that snow fell here Monday That is not unusual for Sportsmans Park but it is uncommon for this particular time of year A couple of seasons ago in the late fall the meet ¬ ing was curtailed because of snow Mr and Mrs Harry James James Session who was a starter in the Kentucky Derby spent a couple of hours in Chicago this morning The colt was later placed aboard a plane en route to California One wonders how the threeyearold who had never before been outside the Golden State appreciated our weather weatherA A A A AFrank Frank Butzow prominent in Illinois breeding circles and who is employed on the publicity staff of some tracks in the area was a visitor Monday Jockey Harold Keene who is usually up among the leaders in riding ranks here steered his first double of the session Monday Keene seems to be about beginning to strike his stride Paul Bailey who rode the locally owned Sunny Blue Farms threeyearold Admiral Porter to fifth place in the Kentucky Derby was a visitor Bailey will leave for Churchill Downs to pilot Mister Carter hi the Bashford Manor Stakes He stated he did not intend to accept mounts here Admiral Porter arrived at Washington Park from Louis ¬ ville in charge of trainer Eual Wyatt and will be pointed for the threeyearold i stakes at the Lincoln Fields and other Chicago meetings There will be a change in the handling of publicity at Lincoln Fields this season Alfonse Schwartz wellknown trainer who for several seasons handled the horses of C U Yaeger Denver turfman is a reg ¬ ular morning visitor and is seeking to get together some racing stock Talk about bad luck Louie Meen the Momence HI backwoodsman just got through setting out his tomato plants when along came winter Jockey Raymond Camp a sad ¬ dle veteran will leave for Fairmount Park where he will ride free lance Also journey ¬ ing to the Collinsville course will be ap ¬ prentice Frank Voss The following horses the property of the Chicagoowned JacNot Stable have arrived at Washing ¬ ton Park in charge of trainer W T Ray ¬ mond Both Lady of Chance Wrack Play Insureme and Amphiblen Dave Hum whose last training stint was for the Red Top Stable which was disbanded last year is on the grounds and looking forward to connecting with some stable stableA A A A AWilliam William Hal Bishop cut down on his stable when he sold the fiveyearold geld ¬ ing Newton Airds to W Wilkerson Prince Pom a fiveyearold horse owned by J A Mayhan injured his right front leg recently and may have to be destroyed T Boschult arrived from Fort Miami near Toledo with the runners Alfred Boul ¬ der and Surely Whirl Marvin Level shipped Sunnycrest Gal and Castle Belle II to Fairmount Park Jockey Palmer Domenico who has fully recovered from injuries suffered in a spill has left for Fairmount Park The latest addition to the jockey colony is apprentice Henry Perez vho has ridden winners at Phoenix Raton and other Bracks in the Southwest He has 38 victories to his credit and is heVe with the stable trained by E B Thomas Tempting has been sent to Fairmount Park in charge of P G John ¬ son The filly is owned by J C Harrison
