New Jersey Report By FRED GALIANI At Times the Tricksters Are Tricked Left With 9975 Quarters in Change Monday Racing Ends Racing Clinics ClinicsGARDEN GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 4 As Jimmy Durante was wont to say Theres always a wise guy in the crowd When paid parking was instituted at Garden State for the first time last fall one of the breed show ¬ ed up all right On the first day of operation a cha pulls into the lot early and hands the attendant a 100 bill Now naturally there isnt any change around so the car hop was forced to let the man in gratis Comes the second days racing same fellow same car same 100 bill Again the attendant was changeless and the motorist caught another free ride But twice was enough He reported it to John Madala safety director here and steps were taken to retaliate retaliateA A A A ABrother Brother Joe Madala was all set the third day for the quarter clipping motorist With much exertion he lugged a sack containing 9975 exclusively in quarters to the gate and lay in wait for the motorist The play performs to script Among the early arrivals comes the same parking fee dodger But Joe has reckoned without his adversary This time the motorist is aware of per ¬ centages He pulls neatly to a stop hands the attendant a quarter and goes blithely on his way leaving Joe Madala mouth agape and faced with the prospect of lugging his 9975 in quarters back to the office The boys were clipped that one time but it is hardy advisable to try it again againA A A A AWith With the passing of dark Mondays also goes the weekly racing clinic which was held oh offdays in Philadelphia These affairs brought together the press radio and TV men and usually three guests representing the various phases of the sport A round table discussion followed which to the trainers ranks in New Jersey is Charley Serbin who spent the last couple of years on the New England circuit Now handling the horses of the Leslie Jane Stable Serbin arrived from New Orleans where he was the third leading trainer with 23 winners behind Elmer Kalensky and William Hal Bishop The 23 markers were scored with seven horses but he has 14 here for this meet ¬ ing Willie Carroll who will free lance here is another fond of New Orleans He eventually hopes to own a house in Craw fishtown Outriders Ray Folke and Bill King spent the winter away from the tracks but not from horses Both of them passed the time breaking yearlings Ray at the Bropkdale Farm and Bill at the Helis Farm at Jobstown JobstownA A A A AJack Jack La Marr who does two daily broad ¬ casts for station WCAM has an alter ego He has turned his hand to song writing and has just authored a tune called Thats How Much I Care He reports that a couple of recording companies are inter ¬ ested in it When its recorded we can try it out over the loud speaker between races Another person hereabouts showing the effects of a diet is announcer Morris Tobe who has joined the slim class He took off 30 pounds
