New Restaurant to Greet Delaware Park Turfmen TurfmenWill Will Open May 10 in Preparation For Meet Set for May 29July 5 5STANTON STANTON Del May 4 A new 125000 stainless steel and concrete airconditioned restaurant will greet grooms exercise riders and horsemen at Delaware Park on May 10 when the stable area opens to admit horses in preparation for the May 29 July 5 race meeting A cafeteria of most modern design the new structure will more than double the capacity of two pre ¬ vious buildings which had served since the track first operated hi 1937 Those stable kitchens have been rebuilt into three dormitories for stable employes restaurant help and horse van drivers bringing the total cost of these projects to 150000 150000The The announcement was made by Donald P Ross president of Delaware Park It was Ross who imposed the rule that grooms would no longer be allowed to sleep in stalls and then built sanitary bunk rooms in large numbers to accommodate them Delaware Park is one of the few race tracks in the country which has such a rule The Stanton track also has fire walls in the barns an automatic fire alarm and control panel system systemThe The construction site of the cafeteria and a new paved parking space ad ¬ jacent to the restaurant which is part of the project will take in an acre and a half located just inside the main stable gate The cafeteria will have tile floors accoustical tile ceiling fluorescent lighting stainless steel equipment stucco exterior and a bright cheery atmosphere within its spacious confines Like the clubhouse and grandstand restaurants and refreshment stands throughout the track the new eat ¬ ing emporium will be operated by the famed H M Stevens Catering Company an institution at major sports centers around the land landOne One of the two former stable kitchens close to the cafeteria is being converted into a dormitory for Stevens employes The other stable kitchen of yore located at the lower end of the stable area ad ¬ jacent to the fivefurlong training track becomes two buildings or dormitories dormitoriesOne One will now afford comfortable sleep ¬ ing quarters and living room for horse van drivers who find it necessary to remain overnight A special parking space of ample size is being provided for the vans The other dormitory is for stable em ¬ ployes ployesTrainers Trainers and jockeys will find estab ¬ lished a preferred space for the parking of their cars in the large area across the creek beyond the racing secretarys office officeCoincident Coincident with the activation of the cafeteria and stable area will be that of Delaware Parks policing and fire protec ¬ tion forces handled by the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau with full co ¬ operation from Delaware state police Pert odic fire drills are held before and during the racing season The track forces have three shifts of firemen three shifts of policemen walking night watchmen who punch time clocks and carborne state police on two shifts 5 p m to 5 a m
