Iceberg II. Easily Scores In Papyrus at Monmouth Gorman Guides HangersTurf Star Three Lengths Before Bobs Alibi By FRED GALIANI MONMOUTH" PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 18. — Proving to be the easiest sort of a winner, Arnold. Hangers Iceberg IT., voted the best grass horse in the country last year, scored a most convincing victory in the Papyrus Purse over the turf here today. The margin over Jaclyn Stables Bobs Alibi at the finish was three lengths, but Dave Gorman eased the winner 50 yards from the finish and was. standing straight up in" the saddle as they went under the wire. Bobs Alibi got the place award by a nose over Brookmeade Stables Going Away. Iceberg IT. was a stout choice with the majority in the crowd estimated at 10,000, and paid .60. He covered the mile over the greensward in 1:39%. The winner was one of four horses in the field of 12 not eligible for next weeks Longfellow Handicap. The afternoon was pleasantly sunny for a change, with a cool breeze blowing at times. Iceberg IT. had won only one race this year prior to todays, and that likewise was a turf course affair at Hialeah. After failing in the Hialeah Turf Handicap, he was rested until early this month, when he finished second in a mile race on the main course at Belmont. Iceberg LT. was under wraps around the first turn and down the backstretch, but when Gorman let him loose, he took command with ease. He displaced Bobs Alibi, who had taken over the lead after killing off The Spaniel, and drew out in trie stretch. Gorman was letting his mount lope along and just before the finish stood straight up and pulled him up a couple of yards under the wire. Bobs Alibi held on by a nose to take second from Going Away, who moved up stoutly on the final turn, got room on the inside, but failed in his bid.
