Ky May 1 Career Boy worked smartly this morning and is now to be considered a probable Kentucky Derby starter Pintor Lea did the same thing and the Jones boys of Calumet Farm declare he has a better than a 5050 chance of starting and Needles in a gallop acted more kindly than any time since arriving at the Downs in quest of the glory and the pot of gold Saturday in the 82nd running of the Ken ¬ tucky Derby DerbyThese These were the major highlights of a morning literally crammed with activity which makes it evident that regardless of who or who may not be eliminated in the Derby Trial this afternoon an obese fipld of perhaps 20 horses will be in the Derby lineup come what may mayThe The defeat of Head Man in the Wood jthe failure of Career Boy in the Blue Grass and other similar events created Derby hopes in many spots where none had existed before and now that everybody is on the grounds hardly no one at this point is willing to declare himself as definitely out outCareer Career after the drill began and finally chucked it and dropped backjust after the finish wire was reached while Career Boy kept on going goingBack Back at the barn after the trial Veitch expressed himself as pleased and was all smiles smilesThe The veterinarian in attendance Dr Alex Harthill told this writer that the soreness apparently had gone from the bruised hoof the right hind and that was a good sign signSuch Such things happen all the time said Harthill and with cheap horses nobody gets overly excited about them But they can be mighty painful at the time but once the pressure is removed as a rule the animal afflicted starts going soundly again at once You cant be absolute about such things but most often these things are temporary temporaryCareer Career Boys famed hoof was taped this morning A gallop by Needles ordinarily would not be worthy of headline news but be ¬ cause Needles is the current favorite for the Derby and because of his playful habits the item that he went along kindly is extremely significant He wasnt on the track very long this morning went slowly twice around the oval but his actual gallop spanned only about a mile and three fur ¬ longs Jockey Dave Erb was in the irons Bonnie Heath coowner of Needles was among the railbirds witnessing the canter canterDown Down the row of barns housing Derby starters the news at Calumet was good Both Ben and Jimmy Jones the latter an overnight arrival from Garden State Park were out on their ponies as Pintor Lea was set down for a brisk spin of five furlongs in company with the good mare Beyond in a right good 101 with furlong in 12 quarter in 25 three furlongs in 37 and half mile in 49 Pintor Lea was tabbed pulling up six furlongs in 116 116Looks Looks Like Pintor Lea Will Start StartYou You can say Pintor Lea has a pretty good chance to start now Jimmy Jones commented as Ben Jones nodded assent But we wont say for sure until later in the week maybe we wont know ourselves until Derby day After all he came back from this drill sound and walking all right but well want to blow him out again may ¬ be Thursday or Friday morning before an ¬ nouncing any definite decision However at this point it looks like hell start startThe The Jones boys refused to commit them ¬ selves for a possible rider for Pintor Lea if he starts although it was quite clear that the man in irons this morning was jockey Robert L Baird BairdAnother Another hitherto doubtful starter Reap ¬ ing Right bounced right back into the Derby setup this morning with a brisk and impressive mile in 140 up the mile and a furlong in 154 and with early fractions of quarter in 24 three fur ¬ longs in 3GV5 half mile in 48 five fur ¬ longs in 100 and six furlongs in 114 Vs VsTrainer Trainer V R Tennessee Wright nodded pleasantly after the work and advised that as of the moment you could count Reap ¬ ing Right back in You may recall he was listed as doubtful late last week when it was learned he came out of the Blue Grass Stakes with a cut on his leg and minus a shoe shoeThere There were six Derby horses on the track this morning who contented themselves with gallops They were wereHead Head Man who cantered a mile and one half and who looked sharp sharpTerrang Terrang the Californian from the stable of Rex Ellsworth struck dockers as being on his toes Owner Ellsworth who flew into town early this morning was on hand to witness the proceedings proceedingsCount Count Chic another California con ¬ tender who seemed to be crying to run and was pulling the boy very hard hardNo No Regrets who did little but seemingly get a little fresh air airInvalidate Invalidate now a stablemate of Reaping Right who did much the same thing thingBen Ben A Jones the horse who went at a pace just a bit faster than a stroll but who was equipped with blinkers and had Jack Skelly in the irons ironsTom Tom J Barry the trainer for High King made his first appearance at the Downs this morning and checked over his charge chargeCome Come On Red a real lone long shot for the Derby is still to be considered a some ¬ what remote possibility and word this morning had it that he might be double entered Saturday in the Derby and in an overnight race on the program and that he might tackle the Derby only in the event of mud mudThe The mornings activity was carried out under dull overcast skies and it was quite cold being somewhere in the forties
