BETWEEN RACES RACESBy By OSCAR OTIS Continued 1rom Page FortyEight FortyEightnonvintage nonvintage threeyearold years We used to think there was a classic way to win the Derby but not any more But the Derby does emphasize as much as any other race and more than most that one way to describe a good horse is the require ¬ ment that he be able to run fast and far This saying automatically assumes that a horse has his weight up Some of the great Derby victors have won wire to wire like Count Fleet Others like Whirlaway have come from behind Still others like Swaps laid close to the early pace went to the front near the far turn and then repelled all challenges Bit no Derby winner can score in this day and age without running fast hence the grain of truth about it being the longest most rugged sprint in the world
