DeSpirito Thrown Injured at Laurel LaurelJockey Jockey Fractures Ribs as Mount Folderol Destroyed Feature Dash to Elberwhirl By PALMER HEAGERTY HEAGERTYLAUREL LAUREL Md May 1 The victory of Walter E Crismers Elberwhirl in the fea ¬ tured Washington Golf and Country Club Purse here this afternoon was overshad ¬ owed by a spectacular spill which took place directly in front of the stands and in view of the crowd of 8501 during the running of the fifth event Tony DeSpirito was thrown heavily near the sixteenth pole when his mount Anthony P Bovellos Fol ¬ derol broke his right foreleg while racing in third position positionDeSpirito DeSpirito Americas leading rider in 1952 with 391 victories was removed from the track by ambulance and was taken to the first aid room for examinations The attending physician later stated that De ¬ Spirito appeared to have escaped serious injury but that he had been sent to Prince Georges General Hospital in Cheverly Md for further examinations and Xrays XraysOn On September 17 1955 DeSpirito re ¬ ceived severe injuries when involved in a spill during the running of the Beldame Handicap at Aqueduct He was hospitalized for considerable time with a brain lacera ¬ tion and back injuries and was out of the At a late hour today it was reported by track physician Robert S McCeney that word from the hospital was that DeSpirito had received three fractured ribs on his left side DeSpirito will re ¬ main hospitalized for further examina ¬ tion and Xrays saddle for about four months He returned to action during the Hialeah meeting where he rode infrequently Since arriving in Maryland this spring he has been the winningest rider in the state and had accounted for todays second race with Cockfield Stables Spin SpinFolderol Folderol left the track in the horse am ¬ bulance and was later destroyed Winner of three of his five previous starts this spring Folderol was a close second choice in the betting behind Auburn Farms Seer who went lame during the running of the race After all of the confusion James A Gross Don Jr was the winner of the event at 34 34Returning Returning to the feature Elberwhirl was winning his first purse since May 1955 and he returned 4240 after covering six fur ¬ longs in 111 The winning rider was Carlos Gonzalez and the team held a length and onehalf advantage over Caro ¬ lyn K Stables Wagon Drill who was a similar distance before Elvin M Warners Hand Reward RewardAmong Among the alsorans in this dash was Mrs Royal Firman Jrs Early Warning the 13 to 10 choice in a field of seven A noted speed horse and winner of his only previous outing this season Early Warning found the speed of Giles D Mills Nick Jimmie a bit more than he could cope with during the early stages and dropped back gradually to finish sixth Nick Jimmie after fractions of 22 and 46 faltered badly to be just a head before Early Warn ¬ ing ingElberwhirl Elberwhirl displaced Nick Jimmie enter ¬ ing the stretch established a threelength advantage and was a driving winner over the steadily closing Wagon Drill Hand Re ¬ ward also raced well in the late stages to to be making up ground
