Eastgate Draws Away to Easy Score s Registers by Five And Half Length LengthFavored Favored Calumet Runner Whips Satans Sister in Clayton at Garden State StateBy By WILLIAM C PHILLIPS PHILLIPSGARDEN GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 1 Calumet Farms Eastgate settled down and did some fancy running when jockey Henry Moreno went to work on him with the whip and the Bull Lea colt drew away to win todays featured Clayton Purse by five and onehalf lengths Walter M Jeffords Singer finished second in the field of sophomores and he was two lengths in front of W P Buyck W C Pricketts Satans Sister Carolyn K Stables Hi Sag weakened from dueling for the pace with Singer and he finished another half length out of the money moneyEastgate Eastgate was a prohibitive favorite among todays crowd of 17591 after work ¬ ing five furlongs in 58 in preparation for todays race and he paid 420 The weather was clear and mild The track was fast and Eastgate was timed the six fur ¬ longs under 122 pounds in 110 Eastgate 110Eastgate was last fall considered by many observers to be the most promising of the Calumet youngsters He won his maiden victory here at Garden State Park and followed that with another local tri ¬ umph and a victory in the Spalding Lowe Jenkins at Laurel Last winter in Florida he failed to fulfill expectations and Jimmy Jones presumed that he favored the type of racing surface of the northern tracks He is to start this Saturday in the 25000 Delaware Valley Stakes which also is at six furlongs furlongsFirst First MeetingThe Disqualification at Meeting The first disqualification of the meeting was made in the sixfurlong dash preced ¬ ing the feature but it did not involve the winning Postal who easily outsped the field to win by two and onehalf lengths Beacon Stables Black Frost had finished second by a nose over Mr and Mrs R C Markus Dead Sure but was disqualified and of ¬ ficially placed third Gayle L Smith com ¬ petently handled Postal who is owned by the Ruffalo Bros and he allowed the Ariel Game colt to coast through the final stages for a final time of 111 He was a close second choice to Dead Sure and paid 640 640Joe Joe Culmone who rode Dead Sure lodged the objection against Black Frost and jockey Robert Louis Stevenson The stew ¬ ards reported that Black Frost came over on Happy Hill Farms Paint the Town ap ¬ proaching the three furlongs marker at the far turn crowding the latter over on Dead Sure who was attempting to move through on the inside Dead Sure had been taken back sharply by Culmone at the start and he again was snatched up when the crowd ¬ ing occurred Culmone then steered the Brookfield colt to the outside for the stretch drive and his mount came on gamely in the final run runRarco Rarco Stables Rarco Saul who had only started one time before in his career clipped off six furlongs in 110 for an impressive victory in the fourth race The sophomore son of light Squeeze and Cauli ¬ flower was ridden by Henry Moreno who also won the fifth race and he won easily by three and onehalf lengths He dis ¬ played early speed in his first start at Laurel two weeks ago but finished un ¬ placed and paid 2280 for his victory to ¬ day Brookfield Farms In Rome As was the favorite He broke poorly under ap ¬ prentice Anthony Grogan and after mak ¬ ing a strong run to reach contention in the backstretch he tired and finished fourth
