New York ByBobHorwood Grey Lag Weights Offer Interesting Study Close Finish Likely in Todays Handicap At Least Six Appear to Have Good Chance ChanceJAMAICA JAMAICA L I N Y May 9 You tell Kilroe that horsemen appear remarkably satisfied with his weights for Saturdays 50000 Grey Lag Handicap some with candidates even unbending so far as to State in strict anonymity lest they lose their good stand ¬ ing that it looked like a real good handicap The shrewd and ami ¬ able racing secretary handicapper grinned and remarked Just for that something will probably win by five Thats the way things usually happen but a study of those with the better credentials leaves one with the conviction that at least half a dozen horses should reach the finish of the mile and a furlong inches apart At the weights there seems little to choose be ¬ tween Mrs Ethel D Jacobs topweighted Promised Land and Ogden Phipps Bureaucracy who is at the bottom of the ladder 18 pounds below the Palestinian fouryearold And of those between the extremes Happy Hill Farms Kingmaker C T Chenerys Third Brother Mrs Wallace Gilroys Oh Johnny Mrs J R H Thourons Ben Lomond Brookmeade Stables Oligarchy Cain Hoy Stables OneEyed King Mrs Jacobs Paper Tiger Jack Schiffers General Arthur and King Ranchs Beam Rider all appear well placed Among the higher weights only Alfred G Vanderbilts aging Find and Edward Seinfelds Admiral Vee who comes from two bad races seem rather unlikely to succeed And Find had dead aim on the leaders at the head of the stretch in the recent Excelsior while Ad ¬ miral Vee is always eligible to come up with a big race racePromised Promised Lands Form Best to Date DatePromised Promised Land has already won the San Juan Capistrano and Campbell Memorial this year and seems the best handicap horse to have raced thus far in the East Of course Bold Ruler could change that ranking in the Toboggan next Saturday while Gallant Man appears to be only about three weeks behind the 1957 Horse of the Year And Vertex who was giving Promised Land eight pounds in the race in which he cracked a hSof last fall is about ready to put his new foot into competition in New Jersey However should Promised Land win big under 125 pounds on Satur ¬ day it would seem that he will be able to provide more competition at Belmont Park for Gallant Man and Bold Ruler than he was able to give Round Table at Santa Anita The gray son of Palestinian was forced to move prematurely in the recent Lincoln Special and Conn McCreary said afterward that he thought he was a bit lucky to have won with OneEyed King Could be that McCreary who can be a brilliant opportunist was being a mite modest OneEyed King is thought to dislike Jamaica and showed nothing in the Gotham won by Oh Johnny early in the meeting McCreary will be back on OneEyed King Saturday Capt Harry F Guggenheims aptly named fouryearold was all but knocked down at the start of last weeks Valley Forge Handicap HandicapKingmaker Kingmaker won last years Grey Lag in a sparkling 148 with eight pounds less than he carries Saturday However the Princequillo gelding had two pounds more than Saturdays 123 when he led from wire to wire in the Excelsior in which he beat Third Brother a little more than a length Kingmaker has a wellestablished liking for the track and should also like his association with Manuel Ycaza who is at his best on frontrunning horses Ycaza will have to ride Busher Fantasy for his contract employer Mrs Elizabeth Graham if that out ¬ sider actually starts In that event Kingmaker may be ridden by Eric Guerin or Pee jay Bailey who is slated to ride Field of Honor That gray colt is a doubt ¬ ful starter from the extreme outside post position Third Brother is usually thereabouts but rarely wins as he often has trouble finding room for his closing rushes Beam Rider also finished fast in the Excelsior but had to go very wide and may have the same trouble Saturday but drops six poun s from his Excelsior impost Oh Johnny is another with a liking for the Jamaica oval and is also likely to get the damp strip that suits his rather tender feet He won the Gotham impressively but 119 pounds is a few more than he seems capable of handling Ben Lomond will again be ridden by Hedley Woodhouse who said after the race that he seemed in need of his effort in the Excelsior ExcelsiorOligarcjiy Oligarcjiy Gradually Improving ImprovingOligarchy Oligarchy who won the Widener under 108 pounds and the Laurel Handicap under 114 is gradually climb ¬ ing the weight ladder The son of Alibhai has the scope and probably has the ability to carry fairly high weights but shows signs of sulking He was reported not too willing when he beat Paper Tiger narrowly in Maryland and he didnt seem too enthusiastic when he trounced Iron Liege at Hialeah while Meeting appeared to outgame him for second money behind Round Table in the Gulfstream Park Handicap He seemed to par ticularly dislike the good track for the McLennan and could very well encounter a dryingout strip Saturday SaturdayHirsch Hirsch Jacobs remarked the other day that he would be very happy if he could win one out of three handi ¬ caps with a topweight adding If you win more than thanContinued Continued on Page Sixty NEW YORK YORKBY BY BOB HORWOOD Continued from Page Five Fivethat that theres something wrong with the handicap The redhead has been discuss ¬ ing little Searching who seems destined to be topweight in most of the local filly and mare handicaps rather than Promised Land who will not be topweight for long Johnny Ruane is going to Pimlico Saturday to ride Greentree Stables Pop Corn in the Dixie Handicap The young ¬ ster showed last winter on Meeting and Pop Corn that he excels in riding on the turf Eldon Nelson is in for a spell of commuting He rides Master Boing in the Dixie and Staysail in the Preak ness prep comes back to New York on Tuesday then rides Attempted at Pim ¬ lico on Wednesday The Preakness would seem to be just about the least suit ¬ able race possible for Silky Sullivan to try to make amends Pimlico being a track for speed horses It would seem much more logical to await the lYz miles of the Bel moht Stakes Ted Atkinson will ride Egotistical in the Toboggan a week from Saturday Mario Padovani has Por Favor galloping on the little training track at Jamaica Horsemen were willing and eager to wager large sums when the horse was claimed at Gulfstream Park that the former circus performer would never get him out of his stall Padovani says his bowed tendon hung down like a trapeze
