On the Trot By MORRIE KURLANSKY Golden Miss After Third Straight Speedy Jake Rodney Always Threat Ray Wagner Finally in Spotlight SpotlightMAYWOOD MAYWOOD PARK Maywood 111 May 9 Handicap sidewheelers again will be featured at Maywood Park Saturday night Golden Miss the splendid Ensign Han ¬ over filly bred and owned by Dr J How ¬ ard Young fresh from a 202 5 victory in an early closing event for four yearolds heads the lineup With lead ¬ ing driver Del Insko at the reins the Grand Circuit star will be vie ing for her third tri ¬ umph of the season in what will be her fourth start but faces a stern task as she will be opposed by Sher ¬ rys Honor Jake Rodney Buddy Barnes Roxburgh Carmen Ozark Pride and Buck ¬ eye all winners of one or more races this season C M Saunders Buckeye a fast closing second to Golden Miss stablemate and full brother Plutocrat in last weeks handicap event on account of his favorable rail position might well be the Wisconsin fillys most formidable foe this week end A winner in 201 at Santa Anita Buck ¬ eye will again have the sulky services of Harry Burright who is currently making a strong bid to overhaul Del Insko in the driver race raceOzark Ozark Pride in his last outing was soundly beaten by Golden Miss finishing third some seven lengths behind but was on the front end in two previous early closers The black gelding has been ex ¬ tremely successful in a relatively short racing career posting X15 victories out of 23 starts in all With ownerbreeder Robert Byrne at the reins Ozark Pride is eligible to show further improvement Edward Moddys Roxburgh Carmen to be handled by trainer Glen Kidwell would be most dangerous if the Maywood Park strip should be other than fast on Saturday night while Buddy Barnes a fast but unsound gelding racing in the interests of Harry Hankins is not with ¬ out chance if there should be an ex ¬ tremely fast early pace paceJake Jake Rodney a brilliant victor in 20215 and sole conqueror of Golden Miss this season is reliability himself although somewhat handicapped by his racing style which will not permit his ownertrainer Lou Meggitt to keep him off the pace for the first part of the race unless someone else will provide pacemaker services at a 200 clip Sherrys Honor Lester Fletchers stalwart mare has been assigned the out ¬ side post position on account of two fine victories here in recent weeks She too will benefit from a rapid early pace and rates again a royal chance to enhance her prestige as one of the nations best pacing mares maresKay Kay Wagner a hard working if incon ¬ spicuous young man from Springfield 111 for once captured the limelight on Thursday night with a double victory He annexed the eighth and tenth races with Dakota Sandman and Abbie Whit ¬ ney respectively Both pacers are owned by his father E F Wagner It might be recalled here that Dakota Sandman was in the center of a cause celebre when the elder Wagner refused to send the Canadianbred chestnut gelding to the post in a claiming race although he had been duly entered A few days before the claiming event in question Dakota Sand ¬ man had paced a mile in 204 over Sportsmans Park to acquire an un ¬ suspected 4 value Wagner as a conse ¬ quence of his refusal had been suspend ed for the balance of the 57 season but the verdict was subsequently made less harsh when officers of the USTA ac ¬ knowledged extenuating circumstances in Wagners appeal appealAlthough Although Dakota Sandman doesnt know all this and keeps on being the big horse in the Wagner stable the frontracing gelding brought about a most important change in Illinois harness racing Whereas up to the Dakota Sandman incident the local sport was governed by USTA rules and regulations under the guidance of the Illinois Harness Racing Commission the state body since is the sole rulemaking as well as ruleenforcing agency in Illi ¬ nois thus following the example set by theNew York commission commissionIncidentally Incidentally Dakota Sandman raced in a claimer last niglit his tag being 3000 with no takers while last year at Sportsmans Park about ten halteruien were eager to take possession of him For the first time in local night harness racing history the judges took the num ber of a winning horse down before post ¬ ing the official result Trainer driver Dave Taddeo driving his own Jerry Tass in the third race tried to force his way into second position thereby causing an accident when Peter Havens with lor don Fraser Jr at the reins went off stride and Shadydale Gayboy driven by Connel Willis ran into the breaking horse in front of him While both Peter Havens and Shadydale Gayboy were uii able to finish the race Jerry Tass went on to win from Fairlawn Lady LadyHowever However the inquiry was flashed as soon as Jerry Tass had crossed the finish line and after a short deliberation the judges posted Fairlawn Ladys number and placed Jerry Tass last Dave Taddeo driver of Jerry Tass for causing interference was suspended for five racing days effective May 9
