Churchill Downs By Bud Lyon Cardinal Sins Victory Tribute to Lavin Sophomore Campaign Bared Colts Prowess Benedicto Eyes Kent and Richards Stakes StakesCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 12 Cardinal Sin registered somewhat of an upset in Satr urdays 20th renewal of the Louisville Handicap when the fouryearold Papa Redbird colt sneaked through along the inner rail in the middle of this long stretch and saved sufficient ground to get up and nip Larry Thompsons Ezgo highweight of the field by a neck in the final stride of that 1 116 miles run Show honors iff this lo275 test went to T Alie Grissoms Shan Pac with tlie public choice and second highweight of the 7horse starting field being but another head away This edition of the Louisville was a real tribute to the skill of Churchills popular and highly efficient racing secretaryhandicapper Allan Doc Lavin who is in his third season at this position Doc rated the top three with Cardinal Sin at 108 Ezgo 119 and Shan Pac 117 pounds and witnessed his pair of highweights indulging in a speed duel from the half mile pole to the wire first one in front and then the other to ultimately have this pair succumb to the belated charge of the W J Sprow Jr colorbearer in the last jump His spacing of two such formidable foes as Ezgo and Shan Pac at two pounds apart seems to be an ideal separation of the pair as those who wit ¬ nessed the event were in complete agreement that there was little to chose between the pair at the end It appeared as if they might circle the one mile strip again and still remain practically on eventerms eventermsCardinal Cardinal Sins victory placed him solidly among the ranks of handicap performers as the colt was making but his third start of the season after having been turned out for a four month period this winter Tommy Stevens trainer of Cardinal Sin gave his charge his seasonal bow at Keeneland this spring when he sent him postward in the Ben Ali Handicap and saw the colt finish fourth under 110 pounds to Safe Message Shan Pac and Ezgo while being just under three lengths shy at the end of that 7furlong plus dash dashCondition Condition and Added Distance Help HelpLouisville Louisville found the colt making his second start and again he caught Shan Pac and Ezgo this time under 109 pounds in the 7 furlong Churchill Downs Handicap where he was slightly over three lengths short at the end of a recordbreaking 7furlong dash Cpndition plus the added distance of the Louisville Cap finally gave Cardinal Sin the needed impetus for the 7203 winners prize While the colt may not be of top calibre handicap status he is still a formidable foe as he demonstrated during his sophomore year which found him earning nearly 35000 the hard way by picking up victories in the Lake Erie Handicap the Randall Park Handicap and the Great Lakes Stakes StakesA A chat with trainerowner Walter The Senator Coleman revealed that the former member of the Ken ¬ tucky legislature was to forsake Detroit this season and ship his 15 head public stable to Donald Ross Del ¬ aware Park which swings into action on May 29 for a lengthy stand Colemans decision mostly was based upon the fact that he has a fleetfooted threeyear old in his barn Benedicto whose owners Mrs Anthony Bellardi and T I Harkins and Coleman feel should get a real chance against top company Benedicto ap ¬ peared in the Kentucky Derby and gave a good ac ¬ counting of himself even though he did not take too kindly to the sticky muddy going prevailing that after ¬ noon and the 10 furlong distance as he finished ninth nearly 13 lengths back of Tim Tam TamDelaware Delaware Events More Suitable SuitableThis This effort was hardly indicative of his form as it was the farthest back he has finished in 14 previous starts one of which found him defeating Nadir in a 6furlong dash at Keeneland where under 116 pounds he stepped the distance in 110 over a sloppy racing strip Delawares threeyearold stakes the Kent at 1 116 miles and the Leonard Richards at nine fur ¬ longs seemingly will suit this altered son of Fighting Fox to perfection In addition Walter has a top ¬ flight distaff prospect in the barn named Lush Lie which performs for his wife and J S Tupper who should fit in rather nicely with all the opportunities provided members of her sex during the Delaware season seasonEddie Eddie Anspach trainer of Mr and Mrs Irving Gushens stable is another heading Delaware way fol lowing the conclusion of this session on Saturday with the former New Jerseyite shipping 12 head belonging to the HBPA national president and his wife to the shores of the Brandywine Heading the consignment will be the sixyearold stallion Star Rover the speedy threeyearold Bumpy Road and the quick juvenile Brush Cut All the Gusheri horses wintered here in Kentucky and all seem to be rapidly reaching the peak of condition and should be in excellent shape for their summer campaign along the Atlantic seaboard Grover Noel
