California By Oscar Otis A AOld Old Pueblo Uncorks Speed in Debonair Intriguing Trio of Stakes Just Ahead Los Angeles Handicap Has Proven Merit MeritHOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD PARK Inglewood Calif May 12 Old Pueblo freshened up after a disappointing winter at Santa Anita made his return to the racing wars here at Hollywood Park a winning one by scoring a length victory over a stubborn Aliwar and the Midwest invader Hillsdale in the 25000 Debonair Stakes Satur ¬ day Under the conditions of the dash Old Pueblo had to assume top weight of 127 pounds as against a mere 112 for all other five in the stake but he packed his weight well leading for most of the way and clicked off a quar ¬ ter in 2215f a half mile in 45 and 5 furlongs in 57J5 He finished out the 6 furlongs in 110 While Willie Shoemaker was not forced to punish the colt at the end he nevertheless had to keep him going for Aliwar who was head and head with Old Pueblo on the backstretch simply would not give up As for Hillsdale we thought his race a promising The Debonair provided no real clues as to the big question with Old Pueblo ie whether or not he will go a distance of ground but fans should have the facts on this within the next six weeks for Old Pueblo is staked in every three year old event to which he could be eligible during the summer season here The Debonair grossed 27100 of which Old Pueblo picked up a net of 14800 a figure which lifted his lifetime earnings to just under the 200000 mark or to be exact 198320 Old Pueblo dearly loves the Hollywood Park racing strip and if he does stick it will be easier for him to do so over this glib surface The Saturday crowd almost approximated that of the same day last year about one or two per cent day for day against last summers recordbreaker However there hasnt been a major stakes attraction here yet whereas last summer at this time some big names had been in action Of course Old Pueblo is a big name but it was his first outing after a long layoff and such a cir ¬ cumstance does make a difference differenceSpotlight Spotlight on Sprint Features FeaturesHollywood Hollywood Park settles down to its first full week of racing Tuesday following a rather successful three day opener Three stakes are down for decision during the upcoming fiveday period Tomorrow the Goose Girl Stakes a 6furlonger for threeyearold fillies takes precedence On Thursday a spare stake will be raced another 6 furlonger for fillies and mares and called the Inglewood Golden Anniversary Handicap while on Saturday the first fifty grander of the meet ¬ ing the 7furlong Los Angeles Handicap will be renewed The Goose Girl is a stepping stone race toward the Hollywood Oaks but the race is more important than it might appear for a top contest would encourage Hollywood Park to give more thought to strengthening its filly and mare stakes program the only division in which said program is comparatively weak Holly xvood wouldnt have to snip at any other stakes in order to bolster the distaff stakes series but rather as additional funds become available for stakes dis ¬ tribution allocate these funds to the fillies and mares rather than keep enriching certain other stakes which have proven their merit beyond a doubt As a matter of fact the Golden Anniversary and its purse of 15000 is an experiment in just that direction directionThe The City of Inglewood is whoopdedoing its 50th anniversary of corporate existence and Hollywood is simply making a nice gesture by naming a stake which will be nonrecurring for its home town However if the Golden Anniversary turns out well the stake could be retained in future seasons under a different name The Los Angeles was revived only last year and pro ¬ vided southern California fans with one of the great turf thrills of the summer a dramatic stretch run by Porterhouse and Johnny Longden in the rapid time of 120 There is no question but that this stake already has earned its niche on the Hollypark perma ¬ nent roster rosterLevenson Levenson Making Harmatz Mounts MountsHorsey Horsey and People Jockeys agent Harold Levenson who helped Manuel Ycaza on his somewhat meteoric rise to stardom but who severed his connection with the rider a few weeks ago has taken over the en ¬ gagements for Willie Harmatz The idea is not original with Hollywood which we believe Horace Wade first thought it up but as an added service to public handicappers the overnight entries are listing first and second calls where a rider is double named a practice permissible only in the event of also eligibles Charles Dickens is training the large public stable of Reggie Cornell while the latter is in Baltimore with Silky Sullivan Cornell is kept constantly advised of all training news by
