weather was more pleasant for Balmorals opening this season It almost had to be Last year the track was fogbound for the greater part of the inaugural afternoon In fact the haze was so thick that it was impossible for the chart caller to tab the running posi ¬ tions of the thoroughbreds at some stages of a couple of con ¬ tests Today the sun was shining brightly and early comers seemed to be full of ginger Horsemen congregated around the racing secretarys office seeking to name their charges for races not only on Tuesday but on Wednesday The 48hour entry rule will apply here It seems to be popular with the ma ¬ jority of the trainers trainersWe We greeted an old friend in the person of trainer R T Dick Watts who has charge of a division of the Travis Ken stable here as well as thoroughbreds for other owners Watts is visiting Chicago for the first time in 10 years Since leaving he has had con ¬ siderable success in California He trained the horses of the late Clifford Mooers for some time and saddled winners of a number of important races including the Santa Anita Derby Dick is one of the fast vanishing brigade of jockeys who rode around the halfmilers in eastern Canada many years ago Dufferin and Hill crest parks in Toronto Delorimer and Maisoneuve in Montreal We believe that Bill Dunkinson who also has some racing stock here is another who rode on that circuit Bill has three head in training They race in the silks of Mrs Dunkinson DunkinsonBollero Bollero Discusses Activity at Jacnot JacnotAlso Also chatted with Joe Bollero who handles the racers of Jack and O T Hogan of Jacnot Farm Joe is starting off the meeting with brandnew silks Wants to go top cabin He stated that Van Crosby who as a young racer was one of the fastest things on four feet hereabouts and tied a 7furlong track record at Arlington Park in 1953 would be given another fling at racing Van Crosby now eight years old has been absent from competition for two years Has been on the farm and Joe says he is feeling so frisky that he might still be capable of giving some young stock a go for it in short distance events Bollero reports considerable breeding activity at Jacnot with foals by the former Calumet Farm star Fleet Bird arriving steadily Has promised a list of the foals in a day or twos twosDoug Doug Davis the Kentuckian made some interesting observations He is the man who sold Bemburgoo to William Hal Bishop for 45000 That is the most money Bishop ever paid for a single horse The asking price was 50000 Bernburgoo has won himself out and more for Bishop His race in Saturdays Sports ¬ mans Park Handicap was a corker Came from last place to race in the middle of the track all theAvay Davis has a twoyearold full brother of Bernburgop in Kentucky named Bernmattar and the colt is being pointed for the Bashford Manor Stakes Mattar the dam of Bernburgoo and Bernmattar is by Burgoo King who won a Kentucky Derby She also had a foal named Matafor who was a good winner a few years ago Mattar is now 13 years old oldWord Word from the West has it that Round Table who became a millionaire Sunday will make several starts at Hollywood Park prior to being transferred to Chi ¬ cago Trainer A A Robertson has nine head here for Mrs Ada L Rice including Hoop Band and Beautil lion Jimmy Cdhway has the other division of the Rice stable at Garden State Park Announcer Harry Henson was an arrival from his Seattle home He was employed by a construction company during the winter and has hand callouses to prove it itPierce Pierce Makes Preakness Plans PlansTrainer Trainer J H Slim Pierce is making ready to go to Pimlico where he will saddle Noureddin in the Preak ¬ ness on Saturday He stated that Jimmy Combest would have the mount on the threeyearold who fin ¬ ished third in tlie Kentucky Derby Noureddin will be seen here later in the season and Combest will ride During Pierces absence his runners will be in charge of his son J H Pierce Jr Jockey Dave Erb went east over
