By Fred Go Hani J JIdun Idun Talent Show Put on Show for Ladies Mrs Bays Unbeaten Filly in Splendid Condition Preakness Now Goal of Mrs Rices Fine Colt ColtGARDEN GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 12 It was strictly for the ladies as far as Saturdays feature events were concerned with Mrs Charles Ul iich Bays Idun and Mrs Ada L Rices Talent Show being the J stars of the proceedings Idun 1957s champion juvenile main ¬ tained her unbeaten record with her ninth straight score in a prep race for the Betsy Ross while Talent Show long deemed a po tential good horse uncorked a good stretch run to capture the Delaware Valley Stakes a sprint for threeyearolds Earlier this year Bob Horwood in his spright ¬ ly column offered the opinion prior to Iduns 1958 debut that she gave the impression off her training she was able to beat a good number of the sophomore colts this season While her race here was virtually a walkover the little running she had to do would confirm Horwoods estimate Only two of an original four horses were leftto take on Idun and as it turned out neither Delnita nor Say So were able to afford her any competition competitionDelnita Delnita did have the lead for a while after the start but it was only because Erb on Idun let her do so After a few taps with tlfe bat away from the gate Erb kept the bay filly under wraps down the back stretch until they went to the turn Onge he turned Idun loose the race was all over As a matter of fact Erb did as much looking over his shoulders as he did riding looking for nonexistent opposition She was merely strolling as she came to the wire eight lengths before Delnita in 112 over a fast track There was nothing to push her so the time is not indicative of what she may have had to run if challenged Obviously Idun will continue to have a lot to say about all the Sophomore filly stakes this season indeed she appears to have them at her mercy And she could very well be a potent threat to male rivals rivalsShortestPriced ShortestPriced Winner in Ten Years YearsIdun Idun left early Sunday morning and returned to her home base at Belmont Park under Sherrill Wards watchful eye An exacting trainer Ward had the Royal Charger miss at peak for the first start of her career The crowd of 36374 hammered away at the mutuels on Idun making her the shortestpriced winner since the fabulous Citation won the Jersey Stakes here in 1948 Her actual betting price was seven cents to the dollar but she paid 220 the minimum under the state law The pool there was win betting only on the race was 127351 and of that 103037 was bet on the filly There was a minus pool of better than 2500 on the affair Idun showed Saturday that her form of last year was holding up and it will be interesting to see how she fares from here on onWhile While Idun was merely putting on an exhibition and we are sure the association wished they had run it as the same Talent Show had to open up all he had to get the job done in the Delaware Valley Mrs Rices colt who was third to Tim Tarn and Jewels Reward in the Flamingo was given an excellent ride by Willie Lester in the Delaware Valley to earn the score While Ive Got Rhythm and Hubcap were bat ¬ tling it out for the lead in the early part of the race Lester kept Talent Show right behind them and bided his time After Hubcap abruptly retreated from the front Lester kept Talent Show along the rail and as Ive Got Rhythm started wavering had to make a decision He chose correctly and got the path along the rail slipping through and gradually drawing away in the stretch AsJimmy Conway said Lester rode a million dollar race The Delaware Victory for Talent Show was so impressive that it moved the colt right back into the Preakness picture as a matter of fact the colt left today for Pimlico and Lester will handle him in the Baltimore classic This was the first time Lester rode Talent Show and he termed him a good honest colt Lester shines when it comes to waiting with a horse in a race timing his move perfectly and it might be that the Preakness could result in some ¬ thing other than what the handicappers predict predictGovernor Governor Meyner and Wife See Features
