Epsom Derby Picture Still Cloudy Even After 2000 Guineas Outcome First Two Across Line Pall Mall and Major Portion Not In Event Nagami Wins Fans FansBy By MICHAEL WEBB WEBBReuters Reuters Correspondent LONDON May 13 The 2000 Guineas classic which usually provides some clue to the Epsom Derby winner this year shed little new light on the Derby The queens Pall Mall and H J Joels Major Portion firsct and second in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas are not in the Derby to be run on June 4 The third horse Arpad Pleschs Nagami did gain some supporters however running on well to finish three and one half lengths behind Pall Mall MallThe The 7to4 favorite Bald Eagle owned by Harry F Guggenheim was a spectacular failure at Newmarket and finished seventh of 14 His Derby odds went out from 5 to 1 to 16 to 1 and now Miners Lamp is cur ¬ rently favored at 8 to 1 to bring off a classic double for the queen queenThe The poor showing over Newmarkets straight Rowley Mile suggests that Bald Eagle may have inherited some of the moodiness of Nasrullah his sire But the colt is bred to stay and may be better suited to the mile and onehalf Derby course courseMiners Miners Lamp by Signal Light out of Young Entry who is trained by Capt Cecil BoydRochfort was not hard pressed when winning the Blue Riband Trial Stakes in his first outing of the season at Epsom last week In this mile and onehalf furlong race he defeated Kingroy by four lengths wi h Barlecroft only other probable Derby run ¬ ner in the field of seven five lengths farther behind behindBut But the queens colt did not satisfy all his critics with his style He was receiving weight from the best of his rivals and had to be hard ridden by Harry Carr early in the straight before he drew away However he gave the impression of staying and came downhill smoothly smoothlyMiners Miners Lamp a halfbrother to Atlas will have a final Epsom test in either the Derby Trial Stakes over a mile and one half at Lingfield on May 16 or the Dante Stakes over ten and onehalf furlongs at York five days later laterBald Bald Eagle who Is a stablemate of Miners Lamp is expected to run in the event which the queens colt misses missesCapt Capt BoydRochfort has another prdmi jnent Derby candidate in Sir Humphrey de Traffords Alcide so the master of Free ¬ mason Lodge could well score his first vic ¬ tory in the premier classic It would be a most satisfactory reason for him if he did for Pall Mall credited him with his first win in the 2000 Guineas GuineasThe The Oaks picture is clear enough Fran ¬ cois Dupres great filly Bella Paola tookthe 1000 Guineas so easily that she seems to have the Oaks won virtually for the trouble of going to the post postCertainly Certainly the Englishtrained fillies do not appear to have the ghost of a chance of preventing this classic going to France They are a poor lot judged by the Guineas running Best of them in that event was Lord Milfords Alpine Bloom and shecould only trail in six and onehalf lengths be ¬ hind Bella Paola and five in arrears of the French runnerup Prince Aly Khans Anlante
