Bloodlines By Leon Rasmussen I IOld Old Pueblo Gives Backers Fast Relief Snow White Makes Indelible Impression Whitney Filly Bred for jSpeed Stamina StaminaJelks Jelks arid McBeans Old Pueblo last Saturday was like that well publicized headache tablet he gave his backers incredibly fast relief In winning the Debo ¬ nair quite comfortably under 127 pounds from Aliwar and Hills dale the Windy City II colt was also boosting the value of knowing your horses blood count Last winter at Santa Anita after win ¬ ning two starts and stretching his unbeaten lifetime streak to eight Old Pueblo went into a dismal eclipse First Eddie Arcaro tried to rate him at 9 furlongs and he ran last beaten 22 lengths at 1 to 5 A short time later in the Santa Anita Derby he was allowed to run his own race but this time he didnt have it and he finished an unimpressive fourth behind Silky Sullivan Arcaro who has a high opinion of Old Pueblo immediately said the colt wasnt Jriimself He had lost the intense animation that manifested itself on the track by his wringing his opponents out with speed they couldnt begin to match Speaking with coowner Jelks before the Debonair he disclosed that Old Pueblos blood count was down before the Derby However said Jelks he looked good and acted good but instead of running to his looks he ran to his blood count From the way he ran Saturday there is no need to wonder where his blood count is now With two speed lines in his pedigree one must question this colts ability to handle 10 fur ¬ longs successfully against the best The important word here is best Unless Silky redeems himself in the East the quality of the threeyearolds who raced at Santa Anita last winter must be very suspect Against them Old Pueblo who may be only a terrific miler but who is truly genuine may beat them going any distance strictly on class classPossible Possible Threat to Round Table TableSeldom Seldom has a filly made such an impression on the turf press in California as the one C V Whitneys 9 i Snow White made at Hollywood Park last Friday in the featured Brentwood Purse at 6 furlongs After she had gotten through with her six rivals racing them into abject submission with one burst of beautiful speed Snow White was immediately handed every filly and mare fixture on the Inglewood tracks agenda and touted as a serious threat to no less a runner than racings latest millionaire Round Table Unquestion ably Snow Whites 6 furlongs in 110 the same time Old Pueblo took in winning the Debonair was a laud ¬ able effort the more so since she was just playing at the end and looked as though she could have run 6 miles as easily as these 6 furlongs At this time with Market Basket east it is difficult to anticipate any filly or mare on the grounds bothering her without huge weight concessions concessionsSnow Snow White has both the racing and breeding cre ¬ dentials to live up to all these nice things which are being written about her Now four at two she won the filly division of the National Stallion Sakes Last year at threey she failed to win a stakes but placed in several of them including a second to the illstarred Here and There in the 10furlong Alabama Stakes at Saratoga In other starts she raced close up to the champion filly and mare Pucker Up the threeyearold champion Bayou and such as Rare Treat and Search ¬ ing On performance she wasnt far away from the tops topsDaughter Daughter of 51 Horse of the Year Snow White is by 1951s Horse of the Year Coun ¬ terpoint the chestnut son of Count Fleet who won the classic 12 mile Belmont Stakes the twomile Jockey Club Gold Cup and the 13furlong Lawrence Realiza ¬ tion Counterpoint not only inherited such stamina through his sire who was a Triple Crown winner but his tailfemale family is also noted for its staying qualities Counterpoints dam Jabot by Sickle won the significant Selima Stakes and she was a full sister to Cravat who won the Jockey Club Gold Cup Brook ¬ lyn and 10furlong Suburban Handicap Jabots half brother Equestrian by Equipoise sired Stymie and the latter is proving to be one of the nations better progenitors with most of his get capable of handling a distance of ground Jabot Cravat and Equestrian were all out of Man o Wars daughter Frilette FriletteOn On the distaff side Snow White is out of White Lady by Mahmoud White Lady a good winner al ¬ though not a stakes winner was out of Top Flight the daughter of Dis Done who won more money as a two yearold than any other filly in history until Idun came along last year Top Flight unbeatable by her own sex has been accused of being a bad producer but here skipping a generation is the prospect of her daughter being the dam of one of the years best fillies or mares With White Lady and Snow White still around it is much too early to use Top Flight as a horrible example Visiting Top Flights wellkept grave at Whitneys Lexington farm out on the Paris Pike recently I thought of this and hoped somehow that her name would live on in good pedigrees as well as in record books Perhaps White Lady and Snow Continued on Page FortyThree BLOODLINESBy BLOODLINES By LEON RASMUSSEN Continued from Page Six SixWhite White will make that hope come true trueSnow Snow White is of the same tailfemale as Silky Sullivan Afternoon the fourth dam to Silky is also Snow Whites fourth dam To Whichone Afternoon who was out of Matinee a full sister to the Subur ¬ ban winner Whisk Broom H produced Coffee Cup the dam of Foxhole the dam of Lady N Silk the dam of Silky To Peter Pan Afternoon produced Flyatit the dam of Top Flight dam of White Lady the dam of Snow White So once again the family of Audience the 1904 winner of the Ken ¬ tucky Oaks comes into prominence an ¬ other stalwart American strain which has flourished for nearly 100 years
