New Jersey By Fred Galiani Pucker Up Triumphs With Display of Class Immediate Objective Is Colonial Handicap Horse Show at Rancocas Farm on Saturday SaturdayGARDEN GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 13 Pucker Up Mrs Ada L Rices big bay mare who was voted handicap champion of 1957 found her way back to the winners circle in a 6fur long allowance race at this course Monday and the manner in which the queen won would indicate she is ready to cut quite a swathe in the filly and mare ranks this year Seven went up against Pucker Up in the race and the mare was away alertly enough to take the lead soonN after the start from the swift Irate disposed of him in the early part of the stretch run then went on to draw away and win handily Grant did not have to resort to the stick to accomplish his objective This morning Pucker Up was nonchalantly enjoying a repast and came out of her race in good condition except for a slight cut on her right rear leg Trainer Jimmy Con way thought she got hit by a horse as she came out of the gate gatePucker Pucker Up a homebred daughter of Olympia Lou Lea won her title last year with six victories in 13 starts and accumulated a bankroll of 229235 Her three big victories were in the Arlington Matron the Washington Park Handicap vand the Beldame In the Washington she took on male opponents and gave them a trouncing as she won by three lengths in l344s for the mile Then again she was only narrowly beaten in the rich Delaware Handicap all of which gahied her her title The immediate objective for the mare now is the 25000 added Colonial Handicap at 6furlongs on Memorial Day She may start before that as Con way would like to get another race intfo her before the stakes assuming that one comes up in the book in the interim and fills sufficiently sufficientlyLacked Lacked True Form in Florida FloridaMrs Mrs Rices mare was making orily her third start of the season in yesterdays dash She had been to the post twice in Florida finishing second to Happy Princess the first time and fifth to Jovial Jove in the Armed Handicap She trained well in Florida and came up to the races fit but didnt run to her true form in those two events Maybe the change in climate aided her because she triumphed impressively on Monday While the Cotonial is her immediate objective it is quite likely she will take on male rivals through the year Commenting on the possibility Conway said If some stakes fit into her schedule later in the year in which she would have to meet colts she might go in them That will be decided later Pucker Up is a strong mare and quite capable of beating the colts any time not to mention the fact that she is in the hands of a trainer who has had enviable success with fillies One only has to recall the exploits of Grecian Queen Carolyn A and Miss Request all of whom were sterling stake winners for Conway If any other fillies have de ¬ signs on the handicap title they will have to go some this year because Pucker Up has given indication she might be tough to topple from the throne she holds at present presentMiss Miss Virginia Helis arrived from New Orleans and took up residence for the summer at the Helis Stock Farm in Jobstown The old Rancocas place will be the scene of a horse show this Saturday held for the benefit of St Marys Hall Burlington N J The af ¬ fair will begin at 930 a m and is expected to run well into the afternoon Twentyone classes will be shown starting with the childrens horsemanship 1 Al Fahey Delaware Parks perambulating ambassador in the interests of the stakes at the Stanton course was on the grounds yesterday armed with blanks galore This years Delaware stakes all close 10 days before the running and Fahey is not letting likely prospects for any of the added money events fail to get on the nomination list through negligence on the part of an owner or trainer Pat Patterson who has charge of the jockeys room at Suffolk Downs stopped off for a visit en route from Gulfstream to the northeast At the Florida track Pat is on the staff of Jimmy Raf terys Turfotos shooting crew Jimmy Edwards an ¬ other associate with Turfotos left this morning with his wife Jeannie for Waterford Park where he will join the publicity ranks of Horace Wades staff and handle the photograph department departmentPepino Pepino Brothers Share Dual Enterprise EnterpriseStopping Stopping off at the track and turf motel near the course is like being in the paddock at the track so many horsemen make it their living quarters for the meeting The motel incidentally is operated by horse owners themselves the three Pepino brothers sharin the dual enterprise Joe and Angie run the motel and Al does the training of the horses Their Landseair won at Pimlico recently to help keep the intriguing part of the operation in the black The Pepinos also own a farm in the area and have four young home breds coming up to the races All are by the stud Zayin who used to race for Gene Mori Two are juve ¬ niles who will come to the races soon while the others are yearlings In addition the Pepinos who have been in the sport for some 10 years have a yearling filly by Lotowhite The motel is a recent addition to their horse racing interests opened two years ago and ac acContinued Continued on Page Forty Three NEW JERSEY JERSEYBy By FRED GALIANI Continued from Page Seven Sevencording cording others in the Toboggan Handicap Satur ¬ day Also going north for the weekend stake is Charlie Sanborns Jovial Jove winner of the Armed Handicap this year Trainer Ray Metcalf has given Elkcam Stables Hubcap winner of the Swift Stakes this year a ball and will freshen him up for the Monmouth Park meeting Hubcap was right in the thick of things in the Delaware Valley vying for the lead with Ive Got Rhythm when he stopped abruptly The colt wants no part of any ¬ thing but a fast track and the mere men ¬ tion of off going makes him stop Hub ¬ cap is a swift sort and should do much better at Monmouth which is not as deep as this track The Floridabred colt is one who likes to hear his feet rattle George Handy who started Peter Fullers Deep Study here yesterday returned the colt to Belmont Park but only for a short rest From New York Deep Study will go to Lincoln Downs for the Hartford Handicap then stay over for the Suffolk Downs Stakes at the Boston track on May 24
