NEW MILE RECORD AT ORIENTAL PARK. Alhena, Outsider in the Betting, Hangs up a New Mark of l:381i in Feature Race at Havana. Havana. Cuba. January 20. — The five-year-old bay gliding Alhena by Star Shoot— Belle of Glen-dale, today lowered the Oriental Park track record at one mile to 1:18*4, when he won the selling handicap from three competitors, one of which, Thesieres. ran him to a head finish. The old mark was only a fifth of a second slower. After the race Alhena changed owners, being bid up v R. M. Small, the owner of Jerry, from si. IM to S1.700. at which figure E. K. Bryson let the winner go. Alle na was the outsider in the betting. Jerry being an odds on favorite with Maxims Choice e 1 in popularity and Thesieres third choice. .!c rrj went out and set the pace for a half mile c! . e!y followed by Thesieres. with Maxims Choice three lengths away and Alhena last. Passing the half mile post Thesieres ran up to Jerry and the pair raced head and head until well into the stretch, where Alhena came along, and as Jerry tir"d and dropped out outstayed Thesieres in the drive to the finishing line. Light showers fell this morning- and improved the track conditions wonderfully. This country needed rain badly and. as a result ol todays showers, there was a soft cushion on the track this afternoon. The soil lire is ideal lor a race track and all that it ne eda is a little rain occasionally. Favorites won a majority of the races. All were well backed at liberal odds. The championship baseball season starts Monday, when two games are scheduled to be played on the diamond at Oriental Park, said by experts to be the b ; i . r constructed in Cuba.
