CAPTAIN SCOTT BY A HEAD Captures Iroquois Hotel Handicap in Exciting Finish. ; Jockey H. J. Burke Rides Three Winners Record Crowd Witnesses the Racing. FORT ERIK, Out.. August. 13. The Thorncliffe Stables Captain Scott, a good looking son of the speedy mare Southern Maid, was returned the winner of the Iroquois Hotel Stakes, which attracted to tin; course of the Niagara Racing Association one of the largest crowds that ever passed tluougli tl$ turnstiles of this lsirder track. The weather conditions were all that could be desired, and the track had dried out considerably, being heavy and holding near the inner rail, but good on the outside. Today w.ts the thirteenth running of the Iroquois Hotel Stakes. It was the fifth race on the program and four of the overnight entries answered the bugle call. Fast Trial staying away. Away to a good start, Corenzio dashed into a two-length lead, followed by Captain Scott. Devonite and AVessie R.. in the order named. This order was maintained for the greater part of the race. Rurke was content to keep Captain Scott close to the loader and never made a move until entering the stretch. After turning for home he called on the Thorncliffe racer and Captain Scott, responding with courage.and speed,- drew abreast of-Corenzio in the last fifty yards and after a hard drive managed to get his head in front as the winning line was passed. Roth horse and rider were enthusiastically greeted on their return to the scales. It was a grand race, and the time for the first part was exceptionally fast for the going. AVilfred Davies, one of the owners of Thorncliffe Stable, was called to the stewards pagoda at the conclusion of the race and presented with a huge floral horseshoe, as a gift of the association. Apart from the feature attraction, the card was a well balanced one and brought together well matched fields, although lacking in quality but making up the deficiency in quantity. A dash of five and a half furlongs, fashioned for maiden jockeys, and bringing a band of Canadian-brcds to the post in the second race, served to graduate jockey J. Ryan from the ranks of non-winners. This youngster, who at one time had aspirations for a pugilistic career, won with G. M. Ilendries Somme in a ridiculous manner from AVar Tank. Previous to the running of the race one of the starters, Francis Rritain, ran away two miles. She was excused of the formality of going to the post after being caught. BURKE IK THE LIMELIGHT, A thrilling finish resulted in the opening dash, when Overrun got home first, a short margin ahead of AI, witli Ferriim a bang-up third. The winner upset the calculations of the talent, who counted on Nellie Lemon to make good. The success of Overrun was in a great measure due to the splendid riding of II. J. Rurke, his vigorous finish earning the decision in the last stride. Again in the following race Rurke was in the limelight, bringing home Hasten On in front of Kttahe, the well-backed favorite. The latter was too far out of it in the early stages to ovcrcom" the winners advantage, although he forced Rurk" to ride him out at the end, finishing with terrific speed. Old Ilendries well-known fondness for heavy going sent him to the ixjst favorite in t lie fourth race at one mile. His chances were practically ruined when he was virtually left at the post. Rutwell did not despair, however, and went after the leaders. Gradually the old campaigner gained on them and in a terrific finish landed second place by a nose, AVnrlike, the extreme outsider, winning by three lengths. Rurkes success witli Captain Scott was his third victory of the afternoon, and two of them were in a great measure due to his masterly riding. The Buffalo Times Purse, at one mile, run as the sixth race, resulted in an easy win for Kings Champion. He was ridden by Rutwell, who brought him from the rear after a slow start and. taking the outside good footing, landed him in front in the stretch. Once in the lead the son of Uncle drew away to win by two lengths. Heavily backed Mountain Rose II. had no trouble accounting for the final dash of the afternoon. He opened up a lead ou the back stretch and increased it in the run home. Clarence Riixton departs for AVindsor tonight, but jockey Mcrritt Riixton. his brother, will remain here until next week. The Ruxtou horses are at AVindsor. Trainer II. MeDutiicI wired to Saratoga to secure the services of jockey II. J. Rurke to ride Roniface in the Edward A Maginu Memorial Handicap, to be run cn Monday. The condition books for the coming meeting at Dorval arrived today and were distributed by Joseph McLennan. Trainer M. C. Kelly, ou advices from James Rean. will ship from here to Havre de Grace to rest up awaiting the opening there. The horses that are now at the farm will be picked up and prepared for fall racing. AV. J. Starr of Montreal, who a few years back owned some good horses, purchased at private terms from C. P. AVinfrey the Canadian-bred Sir Clarence. .Mr. AVinfrey will continue to train the horse and others that Mr. Starr intends purchasing.
