Engagement in Derby Will Pass Up Kentucky Race in J Favor of Santa Anita Fixture LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 4.— Best Effort, a prominent candidate for the Ken- i tucky Derby, who finished fifth in the Blue I a Grass Stakes Saturday, will be scratched! i from the race, it was announced here to- j 1 day by his new owner. Jay Paley. In a conference between Paley and his trainer, Hurst Philpot, it was decided to pass up the big Kentucky race in favor of the 0,-000 Santa Anita Derby. "We feel that to start Best Effort in the Derby Saturday would be a little too severe, inasmuch as it would make five starts in 22 days," Paley said. "But by shipping! the horse to California at once, he will I enjoy a slight let-up. and, we hope, be at his best for the Santa Anita Derby on June 23. Also, I wish to have my horses here for a time, so I can get acquainted with them." Flaming Arrow and Star Image, other members of the string Paley bought last week, will be brought west with Best Effort. After Santa Anita closes, some members of the stable may be sent to Chicago, but will return for the Hollywood Park meeting Best Effort defeated some ranking candidates for the Kentucky Derby in his recent starts, among them Pot o Luck, Sea Swallow, Bymeabond. Burning Dream, Foreign Agent, Darien. and Free for All.
